Cell Phones in STT
What do i need to do to get a cell phone there? Right now I have Verizon and really don't know if it works there or if i need to get a new cell phone carrier and long distance plan? Any advice? Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing...When we went down for our initial visit for a week, I used my verizon droid...this was in early July, and I haven't seen any additional charges on my latest bill. I expected there would be at least SOME roaming charges, but nothing is on my bill. Fingers crossed!
I have Verizon (in NY) as well. Please keep us posted if you see any additional charges. Did you use any data features on your Droid (internet, maps etc)?
Verizon: Roaming charges of up to $1.99/min.
AT&T is your best bet since they include the USVI's in their nationwide plans.
Our son will be traveling down to STT next week and we offered him the use of our AT&T phones if needed. The local verizon office said that he would have wireless service without roaming charges with his nationwide plan. Before you go make sure that your plan is nationwide.
I still feel that AT&T rules. It works for my son in Afghanistan, as well as all of Europe. We even found out that there is service in Antarctica when it looked like another of our sons may be taking a job there. It can get a little expensive if you travel overseas as often as my family does, but to stay connected it is the best world wide service that I know of.

I also have Verizon (Colorado) moving in November. I have a droid. I spoke with a Verizon rep here and they said I would have unlimited text messaging as well as my data package on the Droid. Any phone call however would cost 1.99 per minute. NYIslander, did you get service with your droid and were you able to access the internet from your phone. I am trying to decide if I need to switch to AT&T before the move. Any advice would be great. Thanks!
Molly:
I think the agent meant........no roaming charges if you call the USVIs from the mainland.....however, if you're in the USVIs there will be a roaming charge of up to $1.99/min........better check that out.

If you are on STT just be sure that you know how to turn off international roaming and particularly data roaming so you don't end up logging onto a tower in the BVI accidentally. While AT&T may fix your bill for you once they are getting testy about it.

I'll chime in here about T-Mobile. I'll be in STT for 3 months. No extra charges for me, and the "coverage" map looks good all over the island.
