Cell Phones
I'd like some recommendations on what cell phone is good for STX. I'm changing my service to Cingular based on what I've read on this message board. Now I need to know what actual phone works best. Thanks again for ALL your help.
Cingular provided me with a Nokia phone.
My Treo 600 works fine.

My stateside T-Mobile service starting working while I was on STT although the phone display said "AT&T Wireless" instead of the usual "T-Mobile". I took several calls that orginated stateside while on Island. T-Mobile advertises NO roaming charges but we'll see. Those may have been some very expensive calls!
does anyone know if verizon gets any kind of service down island? i have a dual service phone that works with GSM and TDMA towers. any help is appreciated. thanks
Hello Pmcmanis,
When you say "down island".... which island(s) are you refering to?

hey just wanted to drop a line and let you know that verizon does not work on the islands. i am moving down and had to have my phone shut off due to lack of svs. total bummer. cost like 200 to shut it off!
i know at&t gets pretty good svs
When I was there in September, I used my AT&T serviced phone and I had just as good reception as Sprint and there is no roaming with AT&T. So that means there are no roaming charges and cheaper bills. My friends got hit hard from Sprint after the storms.
I think I will stick with AT&T when I move down.

I am talking about STT and STJ. I am making the move wed. the 20th. I have found out that verizon will work but the roaming goes in and out and is very patchy and if it is roaming i get smacked with a .69 a call which isn't really fun at all. now my big question is at&t or cingular?
thank you everyone for all the feedback.

Hello Pat,
A side note on why I asked where you were referring to by "down island"... in the USVI we generally refer to the islands down the Caribbean chain from us... down island.
As you found out about Verizon... its not consistant on the roaming... I have read/heard users state that when they call customer service they get mixed answers about usage in the VI. I previously used Cingular and it worked well. I use Sprint now.
All the best with your move!!

I've always used my Sprint. It worked great on all islands, and never a roaming charge, plus no long distance charges to the mainland.

Thanks for your response. Which Nokia do you use? Any problems with reception using this phone and Cingular?
Thanks to everyone for their help.
It's a Nokia 1100. The only time I've had trouble calling anywhere, including Ohio, has been when in deep valleys.
