casino rumour
Heard a rumour that STT had gotten approval to open a casino...anybody in the know?
Anyone heard anything on this?

Approval by whom? Wouldn't that have to be done by the Senate and Govenor, and would consequently be in the news?
I read about the $150,000,000 605 room Resort Casino/18 hole golf course project near the Great Pond in both of islands newspapers two weeks ago today,.The Golden group got a permit by defaught because from what I can determine local officials were unable get enough members together to vote. I also got the impression Mr. Golden was willing to stillwork with the government on issues such as sewage, wild life concerns etc.
Yes, I recall reading about this now. But this is on St. Croix, not St. Thomas.
Originally (1994?), casinos were put up for a vote and voted down by the entire electorate. Then there was a vote for casinos to be allowed ONLY on St Croix, voted on by Crucians only, and it passed. Many St Thomians have been suspicious that "they" were going to try to sneak one over on us eventually. So far the VLTs have kept the powers happy...
East Ender, That is interesting news about the vote. St.Croix needs that extra edge as they are not on the beaten path of tourists like St. Thomas.
Yes, but St. Thomas is allowed to have them after ten years have passed. All they need is a referendum. Looks like we will be seeing one next election, you watch!

How much revenue would a casino bring in to STT? Would it draw more tourists to the island?
I think the question is: Can St Thomas HANDLE many more tourists?
Ronnie: I had forgotten about that! I would love to see some numbers on how much the casino has helped St Croix. I get the feeling that it is like Carnival- St Thomians go over to see their friends, and that it doesn't bring in off-island tourists.
It will be different in St. Thomas. You think if Paul Golden wanted to put his casino in St. Thomas it wouldn't be built by now? Providing it could be of course.

Personally, even though I work in the casino industry, I think adding casinos to STT is a really BAD idea. I had just heard the rumor here in Mississippi, and because I'm working on moving to the islands I was curious.
Michelle: I am from Clinton, Mississippi and moving to St. Croix in May of 2005 right after my son graduates from high school. When are you planning on going and where are you from? I'm originally from Vicksburg. I love to gamble -- a little too much I might add but am too excited to see the difference in Mississippi's casinos and St. Croix' casino. Keep me posted on your move. Thanks, Kathy
Kathy, The Divi Carina Casino is laid back. It is not huge- 300 slots and a few tables including one craps table. Still it is nice to have, You can take virtual tours through Divi Carina Resort. Tedd from Michigan
