I am planning on moving to St. John sometime this spring. Ideally I would like to take a trip out there for a couple weeks in January. Meet some people and network for jobs and an apartment. How much do you think an apartment will be per month? I would need a studio or one bedroom. Also, what is a safe amount of money to go down there with when I move? I plan (hope) to get a bartending job or something along those lines. Any advise would be great.

Thanks,

John

An apartment can run you anywhere from $550 to $1200 plus, depending on what is offered, number of rooms, ocean view... A studio will more than likely be on the lower end of the price estimate. Networking for jobs is your best bet, and it is a great idea to come down and 'feel you way around' before making the move. Money - not sure you want to carry large sums of money with you in cash or travelers checks??? Don't you have credit cards or debits cards that you could access your funds from local VI banks, perhaps bring some checks from your stateside bank and set up an account at a local bank when you get here. Do carry some cash with you in case you have difficultly accessing your money stateside. I am not quite sure what a good figure would be. Certainly several hundred in cash or travelers checks, if you don't plan on being able to access your funds stateside than you need to bring enough to cover first months rent and a security deposit...

Thanks a lot. I appreciate you taking time to respond. One more question (for now), are there any fitness centers on St John for public use?

John: It is a great idea to come down and check out the scene before you move here. I interpret your ? about $ to mean, how much do I need to sustain myself...and I think you need at LEAST 3 months worth, better if you have 6 months...It is very difficult to find long term rentals on St John. There are a lot of people who live in Red Hook (St Thomas) and spend $6 a day to take a ferry over. As to your other ?, there is a fitness center... Gym in Paradise , (340) 776-0600...
