In the 90's sometime back, we hosted what was called a 1/2 triathlon here on STT - our family did what 'newarrival' mentioned - we volunteered to help - walked out of the house and down to the main road where we helped with traffic control and water for the bikers who came by for about 2 hours - it was exciting and inspired my teenage daughter and her class at school to start a cross country track team - so maybe just exposing our youth and families to different energy outlet gives them another path of personal development and makes a small difference.
Surely seeing hundreds of healthy and active athletes visit our island and their personal dedication to such a strenuous lifestyle can have a positive and beneficial effect on our VI youth and maybe that fact alone is reason enough to host such an event.
Having just survived the traffic and parking snarls of Carnival here on STT last week -- a day or 2 of daytime restrictions on STX for a powerful event like the Triathlon seems worth the minor inconveniences.

Oh yelllllllllll those fit bodies are nice to look at. But lets keep them safe.

Of course St. Thomas would love to have this event given to them. I will gladly give up a day on the roads.
Have lived here for 19 years and never once wanted nor had to get out on a Tria. day. Find it as a nice relaxing day at home or if i choose to i go to the fire station at cotton valley watch. It so much fun to cheer the bikers on.

I am sure other places arent having trouble with roads closed. Why should we???

If you live anywhere desireable there will be days out of the year where you are inconvenienced because of other's desires to share that wonderful place. I lived in downtown DC, I had to deal with all kinds of stuff. Just 2 weeks ago I was back and was walking to the DC DMV to try and get my car re-registered (wife is having baby in DC this summer) I had to walk my pregnant wife through somewhat violent IMF/Worldbank protests. Did I mind? Not really, it was a bit exciting and I know that this is part of living in the nations capital. On STX part of living here is dealing with the triathalon once a year. If it was every weekend I wouldn't live here but once a year, no big deal. I live up from the ball parks in C'sted which is the last place to re-open...fortunately I went the back way to south shore road so I was able to get out at 2:30.

Exit Zero, that may have been the event that a friend of mine who was a massage therapist volunteered to give massages to the cyclists afterwards. She said it was really tough work & like massaging a pile of rope since they had no body fat.

I think the triathlon is great. Our roads get patched up, the athletes pour money into the economy and they inspire people to get out and exercise. I saw all kinds of people out this morning walking, biking and running. One day of roads being blocked off is well worth it. Last year we had a group of 10 athletes stay up the hill from our house. They had never been to St. Croix before. I offered to haul their bikes to the airport when they left. They told me over and over what a beautiful hospitable island we had and said they would start coming here to vacation.

You expressed an opinion and others have disagreed. What is wrong with that? Are you the only one allowed to express your opinion? I saw no torches or pitchforks only people expressing their opinion and reaction to your position.

i love the triathlon. it's a lot of fun to watch these athletes do things that normal people can't nor want to do. plus, anything that gives St. Croix a little more money, a little more press, and something Prestigious in the world is awesome! i met a group from Mexico (i know! i stayed back pretty far during the conversation, LOL) and they never even knew what/where St. Croix is. Just for a few more people to know that we exist is pretty cool! plus, people from the island compete - and that's great! i do wish that the conditions were safer for triathletes to practice b/c we seriously almost collided with a few while driving down South Shore. All in all - who cares that the roads are closed for a Sunday? it's the islands! Relax! Go off the beaten path. stay in a villa in Frederiksted for the night and take a "vacation". i say keep the triathlon!
