Is there a need for good carpenters, I do decks, walkways, & home remodeling, with 15 years experience. My wife is a massage therapist, we aren't looking to make a fortune, just enough to live and get by. We have been coming to the islands for the past 8 years, and want to make it our home. Due to the present economy, just wanted to hear some feed back on whats going on in STT. I read a few threads about the high season not being so great . The economy is bad everywhere, has it effected the islands greatly?

It sure has & will get worse through the summer. We're pretty much done with the tourists who booked before the melt-down & the summer is looking grim & the main economy on St. Thomas IS tourism. It doesn't matter if you're working in a tourist-based business or not. Your potential customers, unless they're government workers, do directly or indirectly. Of course, skilled carpenters might find a niche as can massage therapists but it would be a really good idea to bring a lot of money to tide you over until things pick up. Best of luck to you.

Your plan to come at the end of summer is a good one as people are ramping up for the new season and it is the best time, in my opinion, to be looking for new opportunities here in the VI. Your wife could find work with any of a number of resort salons. Construction jobs, at lease on STX, are always available and I can imagine STT and STJ are similar. Good people are always in demand.

I'm always amazed looking around STX at all the new construction and the remodeleing that is STILL going on despite the downturned economy. It may have slowed down but there is a lot still happening here. STX is growing and has great prospects for the future. Many residents of STX will laugh reading that... cause we've been saying it for years, are considered STT's uglier, forgotten, big sister...and a lot of people are skeptical we will ever come into our own...... but, I've seen so many indicators of great things to come that I'm still optimistic for STX. We have the BEST island, lots of potential, great values still on real estate (compare to other resort destinations- especially US ones)..., lots of plans for great things to come... and energetic, intelligent, creative people!

We grow slow, but... we grow.

That may be your perception but it's not true or the opinion of anyone I know down here. The only thing I've always heard from SOME people is that STX always whines that STT gets everything which I also don't believe to be true.
