Carambola-Mariott Not Paying Workers
I'm friends with two of the workers who have been on island renovating rooms at the Renaissance Carambola Beach Resort on St Croix. They have not been paid in two weeks and have had to stop work. Other unpaid workers have left island. Carambola says it doesn't have the money.
Anybody know the details?
I know Carambola had defaulted on the loan from VI GERS (retirement system) and was renegotiating.
I also know they've had a lot of customers over the Christmas holidays, so they can't be entirely broke.
I find it unconscionable that they charge large amounts of money to wealthy people to stay there, but can't pay the people toiling to remodel the rooms.
I am thinking that is a sub-contractor job - usually Carambola will put a job like that out to bid and pay down the amount as a percentage of the work done - are they working for a sub contractor who may not have the funds to pay ahead of Carambola issuing them their completion checks?
Do your friend's have times sheets or invoices from the work performed? It's time to get tough. Even if they are employed as laborers by a sub, go straight to the GM. Look professional, act professional, have copies of all supporting paperwork. Present an invoice. Be prepared to negotiate and sign a release. Hope for the best.
This BS happens in the trades all too often. Keep records. Demand payment when due. They'll get the message.
I had to threaten a guy once with criminal charges to get paid... I used the" theft by deception " angle. He was a president of a bank and I got my money the next day with an apology.I also acted like a crazy lunatic when I showed up at his business office to collect.....CRAZY WINS everytime.....Try it ..it feels good too(tu)
When the Marriot Cove on STT got way behind on my $ I had to start knocking on the door of the bookkeeping/payroll guy. He was a nerdy little computer guy that did not like confrontation. I got paid pretty quick.
