does anyone know the reason the car washers got "kicked" out of the goverment lot downtown? now they are putting buckets along strand street to keep people from parking there. unless you want your car wash...

now that is interesting. the guys were always nice to me, but they were messy. trash on the ground and all. i know awhile back they got reprimanded for all of the trash on the ground.
can they legally prevent people from parking on strand street to do business??

They may be dirty but having them hang around the government lot was never bad. They kept the area relatively safe at night as muggers won't go near such a big crowd and the car wash guys are generally harmeless.

@ Lizard - I'm not sure what that means exactly.

I always felt safe and knew my car would be safe when the car wash guys were there - they were always very nice to me and polite ... (some more nice & polite than others). When I saw they were gone, my first thought was "oh crap, now the break-ins will start up here". I've never had my car broken into there ... or anywhere else for that matter (knocking on wood and hoping I'm not jinxing myself) 😉

I'm sorry to see them go.

I never got my car washed from them but, I did ask the one kid to keep an eye on my jeep and tipped him quite well ahead of time.

It is not legal for them to prevent people from parking on Strand street. I have seen a cop move chairs or pylons that people put to "save" a spot. When I asked him about it his response was, "all parking is first come, first serve, no one can claim any spot". Surprised me that he was actually doing something about it. I'd say if you see them trying to keep someone from parking you should call the cops.

I never had a problem with them, and I do think they "probably" kept an eye on things.

But..... I can see that they might have been intimidating to tourists.

I've also been told by a young person that "everyone knows they deal drugs there."

From what I've heard they were being invaded by 'rouge' car washer who were people not as honest as the regulars. These fringe elements would bring their baby's, dogs, kids and leave them while they tried to undercut the others so the police just cleared them all out. I understand that when it all began (car washing there) the regulars wore 'uniform' shirts to let people know they were legit. I always liked them and they always did a great job on the cars. Was sorry to see them go. They even cut down the shade they had.

I hope they go back. Although we were leary of parking our car in the govt parking lot the first visit we made to the island (2004) because of these guys, we later learned they were making a living by washing cars there, not just loitering, and were friendly. The next year we parked there and they washed our car, even put something on the tires to make them look good. We have to pay quite a bit back here at home to get the service we got by those guys. Every visit we make to St Croix now we always park in that lot and let the guys wash the car. We've come to know them and really enjoy talking to them. I hope the original guys can get their operation going again.

I paid $20 for my Bronco II and was usually quite happy. In fact one of the good ones has cards and I always asked for him. They are independant not working together.
It is a shame to see them gone. I agree with Lizard, it's nice to see someone earning a living.

the regular car wash guys i trusted (sort of) even though i knew of two people who had things stolen out of their cars during the day.

But police had one guy hand cuffed and bent over a car the other day. don't think he was a regular C.W.Guy.

Friday when leaving work they had about 6 cars lined up behind the pentheny building. and buckets out to keep cars from parking their. i moved two of them. i park back there and they are usually very nice, but their has been more and more of them showing up.
First time one steps out of line i will call police. i walk back there by myself some days.
