So last month, I almost failed the registration inspection for my jeep because the tires were run down. They seem to have gotten really strict at the BMV. There is no way my now expired old truck is going to pass inspection of any kind...I cannot get in contact with the guy who usually does registrations...so, does anyone have a person they can recommend for handling re-registrations? I'm on STX. Thanks in advance!

I don't know about STx but STT is getting stricter. The fella who does my registrations had to take a picture of the car and take it to BMV to see if they would illegally inspect it. LOL but true. My car/truck has all the signals, lights, tires (good) and what not but has a few dents in it that would cause it to not pass inspection.

Also cost $100 this year unlike the $50 last year. "Fella" did say this was probably the last year this service was going to be available. I contacted another source and he refused to quote a price on the phone. A friend tells me the "fella" who did his last year wanted $300 this year.

Ah, the ilons are not what they used to be.

pamela, a few dents would cause it to fail inspection?

Yes, if they are in the right place. In my case, the dents are in the rear and the door is "locked" with a rope so in theory all my doors don't work although I don't consider the rear hatch an escape route but ....... Again some it depends on the mood of the inspector.

Well I guess I'm going to have to register it the hard way! Got a replacement rearview mirror today and now just need to find someone to get the signal lights working...hopefully they won't find any other problems that would cause failure...Anyone know whether a window is required, or whether it needs to roll up ( since I'm missing driver's side window)?

No, can't take it off. It's the back hatch - I drive a Jeep Cherokee.

I do believe the windows must roll up and down but that could be old information.

stxem, I believe that the only window required is the front windshield but if your other windows are there they must go up and down. If the window is missing I don't think there is a problem.

Does anyone know what color on the registration slip "MUL" stands for? My truck has parts in it from another and I'm trying to figure out which registration belongs to which! I suspect "Multicolored" since it is creamish with a red trim, but need to make sure!

Try matching the VIN?

A friend of mine recently said "WooHoo! Got a new heap and this one actually has doors"
Funny to see her PU truck with no doors.

I've never been asked to roll up/down windows. I don't think they check that.
It's usually like this. Unless they've cracked down.
lights check
horn check
wipers check
turn signals check
reverse light check.

Park over there and go inside to wait, and wait.

They might look at the tires and windshield.

They asked me to roll the windows up and said it was to check for window tint.

Do they check emissions, or fail you if the "check engine" light is on?

The VIN numbers do match, but the dashboards were switched! Since things may not match up perfectly, I just want to conclusively make sure that all the registration ducks are in order before I go in case they think the truck came from a chop shop or something. They have gotten a lot stricter at the BMV...a friend of mine said he saw a woman in front of him fail inspection last month because two of her tires didn't match. They sent her away.
