Car 'Registration' Sticker
Ok... newbie question:
That registration STICKER on my car windshield I got when I bought/registered the car... it's dated January 2009, so I assume I need to get a new one.
Do I just go back to the main registration center off the highway to get it renewed?
Or are there other locations I can go to on StX to get it dealt with?
And when I go to the registration location, do I have to go inside? or do I drive up to the outdoor counters to get it renewed?
yes, you have to go back to the registration station, which due to renovation is the far building on the west side of the lot. YOu have to pass the inspection (horn, lights, brakes etc.) then go inside with your papers and get a new sticker. Took me about an hour to get it all done and the new sticker in place. Remember Monday and Tuesday are holidays this week!
Maybe it depends on who is working that day, the inspectors have only asked me how many miles I have on the car, checked the box's off, told me to go inside to the far counter and give them the paper work. I get there by 8:00 AM back on the road by 8:30AM Painless. Oh look at your registration there is a date on it ,your car must be inspected by that date. The decal has the month on it, thats not the expiration date. The VIPD could ticket you if your date on the registration has past.
When you go into the lot, do not drive up to the inspection booth. Park your car and (arrive early) go to the booth and give your registration, and proof of insurance. He will then tell you to bring your car up to the booth. When you are done he will tell you to go inside to window 2.
Mid month is best time to go.
We purchased a car from a rental agency in June, but the registration sticker says January. I haven't looked at the registration to check the date, but I will do so immediately.
Can this be done on a Saturday? If so, what are their hours?
Thanks for the info.
I just went this morning to update my gf's car. I thought arriving at 7:45 would put me at the front of the line. I guess the first day open after a 4 day weekend isn't such a great time. Although, the new AC, flat screens, and comfy chairs sure softened the 1 hour blow.
Inspection took 5 min (the guy yelled at me for honking the horn twice accidentally) and that's where the wait begins.
Just got back from getting my "sticker" on STX. It took over 2 hrs. The guy at the inspection area was nice and prompt--took about 5 minutes. Went inside to window #2. There were 10 people in front of me and about that many waiting. Got to window #2 in about 15 minutes and was told to wait for my name to be called..... 2 hrs. later I was still waiting. I couldn't hear if they called my name or not because the tv was so loud you couldn't hear the name announcement being called by the lady behind window #5. I went up to that window, waited my turn, and inquired if my name had been called. The lady behind the window said no and told me to sit down and wait. Again I waited. All the people from the 1st line in front and behind me were gone. I realized I did not recognize anyone in the room from the time I had arrived. I then went to window #5 again, thinking I missed hearing my name called and once again was told no and to go sit down. This 2nd visit to the same window resulted in the lady treating me rudely. I remembered my "good morning & afternoon's" and was polite with my inquiry. I waited again then went back to the original window #2 (the 1st window where you turn in your paperwork) and inquired why it was taking so long. I told the lady all the people in line behind me had been called and were gone and that I'd been waiting 2 hrs. She then proceeded to tell me I HAD NOT been there 2 hrs. and to go wait my turn. I corrected her (politely) that I had indeed been waiting 2 hrs. and was just curious what was taking so long. She informed me she would check on my paperwork. Now bear in mind the distance from window #2 to window #5 is about 30 feet or so and I was concerned my paperwork got "lost". Well, here's the remarkable thing...5 minutes after inquiring for the 3rd time, they called my name. I went back to window #5 and got my sticker and the lady (who I inquired with twice) was so rude I couldn't believe it! The whole time I was passing my money through the window I was thinking "I'm paying this rude woman to take my money and give me my car sticker". I was afraid they'd hold my sticker "hostage" so I just smiled and paid my money and left. I've lived on this island for many years and have never been treated so rudely. Hopefully, new comers to the island will not have the same experience. It appears they have the same disgruntled, underpaid people working for the DMV. Whew---just had to vent!
I think whatever some of them earn, they're overpaid if they're that rude. Since I got my senior ID, I at least get to only pay half what I would normally.
I was told once to bring the ladies a chocolate bar. I did and ate it 'cause it took so long. True story. They weren't rude to me but being from here, I have been told that I get this "look" and they know better. (glad it works 'cause any of them could squash me like a bug if they wanted to!):-o
LuckyGirl,
I feel your pain. I think I must have gotten the same woman. Everyone else was nice, but it still took a while because they kept mis-spelling my name. THAT woman and one of the inspection guys (Don't know his name, but not the big guy. He is a doll) are the weak links in that agency.
