car or no car?
I have read a lot on this sight and this message board, and I know that there is a public transportation system, also that you have to own your car to ship it, and that the salty air rusts cars... but can someone tell me if it's okay to live in STT without a car? Amy and I will be vehicle-less while we're there!!
Any info will help!

It depends on where you live, where you work, & what kind of deadline you are on. If you live & work on a route where you can take the dollar safari taxi you should be ok, if not & you have to pay a private taxi you both would be better off to rent a car because you can run into quite a bit of cash outlay every day just to get to work & back...and some areas it is impossible to get a taxi by calling for one, like the North side & West end.
If you live downtown Charlotte Amalie you shouldn't have a problem with getting a taxi...BUT there are other issues to contend with if living in town. If you live on the East End you shouldn't have a problem using economical safari taxis but you can't call & have one at your doorstep, same goes for the West side.
BOTTOM-LINE:
A car is much more convenient & cost-effective than not having one.
I've been living on STT for the past 4 months without a car. I was able to find an apartment about a 25 minute walk from my job and a 2 minute walk to the $1 safari line. I was also able to make an arrangement with some co-workers who have a car to pick me up on their way to work. Some of the advantages of being without a car for me are: not having to cough up $2000-$5000 for a decent running car, not having to pay high gas prices which average$2.10-$2.20/gal. on STT, and not having to pay high prices for auto insurance. Some disadvantages are: of course walking everywhere, walking when it rains, relying on others for transportation. having to pay gypsy taxis $7-$10 to take me home from the supermarket ($1 safaris won't let you take more than 2-3 small bags).
I would say if you find a apartment within walking distance of a job and public transportation/safaris and you dont need to get anywhere in a hurry, you don't really need a car. There are some employers, like mine, that offer an employee shuttle service. But if you plan to travel to several locations around the island, and you don't want to spend all day getting there, I would say a car is a necessity.
Hope this info helps.
