Car model...

Hi All,

I've been reading the postings here (very helpful) and the Settlers Handbook (also very helpful). Both sources seem to tell me that if I ship a car it should be reliable and able to handle the unique conditions of STT. Additionally I've read that it could be difficult to find parts and maintenance for some models of car. One post on here said that jeeps are very popular on STT...for the tourists to rent from what I gathered...so the question is, because of the quantity of jeeps on the island is it easy to find parts and/or mainenetance for jeeps? Secondly, is there a surplus of used jeeps for sale on the island or would it be wise to purchase on the mainland and have shipped?

Thanks all...I appreciate the help!

Bill

I understand that there is a new Toyota Store on St Croix. You might check there rather than going to the trouble of shipping. I am sure that they would have used car trade ins.
And probably a parts dept.
Good luck, I will be watching to see what other info you come up with.

Hello Bill,

Jeeps are pretty popular on St. John. On St. Thomas rental car agencies have jeeps, cars, SUV.. more of a range of cars. There are a lot of different type/make/model cars on St. Thomas. Sports cars, BMW... there aren't many or any certified shops to work on such cars and parts would be a matter of ordering them. And in some cases other cars, common cars you still have to order the parts for... examples... I had to order a windshield for a Nissan (took a couple weeks, they sent the wrong one the first time), a computer for a Mitsubishi had to be ordered but a mechanic had a part from an old car that he had that he was able to take a part from one and fix mine and that was good enough for me, Toyota had to order parts and/or get some from chopped cars. Had to order parts for a Kia too. In some cases the parts were available here and sometimes they weren't or they were cheaper when ordered.

It really depends - what type of car were you thinking of bringing down? And yes there are used cars here to buy, car rental agencies sell their cars every once in a while, banks have reposessed cars from time to time and car lots have cars as well.

If you search this board (the search option is at the top of the page) for cars there are several discussions or to buy or to ship.
