Hello all...Once again, I'd just like to thank everyone for being so helpful!! I am moving down to St Thomas in March and I need to insure my car before getting there and getting it off the boat. My question is: Does anyone know of a local car insurance company there that is reasonably priced and that I can call and make the arrangements before I leave? Any info is (as always) greatly appreciated!!!

Juni

Hello Juni,

I would suggest you call Guardian Insurance and get rates... Try (340)776-8050

Don't bring your car if you can help it. Other than that Insurance is cheap here.

Aaron,

Just wondering why you'd say not to bring the car and everyone else has told me I will need one...? Thanks Islander for the suggestion!!!

Hey Juni. I definitely suggest taking your car. I could ship mine back and forth more than twice and it would still be cheaper than taking a cab once a day to the North Side.

Be prepared for the run around though when you go to register it and a really long wait. Pick up your car as early in the day as possible and have all the paperwork ready.

Who are you going to ship through and from where? I used Crowley out of Jacksonville the last time, but I'm thinking about going out of Miami this time.

Oh yeah and another plus to taking you car is that if you leave island and don't want to ship it back, you can usually get more for it than it is actually worth since it's a state-side car. I got double for a Corolla with way too many miles.

Does anyone know the approximate cost to ship a compact car from Jacksonville/Miami to St. Thomas??

Call 1-800-CROWLEY They can give you the price. You'll need to know your VIN # and give them all the specs of your car. They will add any tariffs or fees for you. It really all depends on the weight of your car and whether or not it is a domestic or import car. But they will be able to tell all of that by your VIN #.

In the fall of 1999 I shipped a '91 Toyota Corolla from Jacksonville to St. Thomas and it cost about $600. You can ship it collect and pay when it gets there, but BEWARE if you don't pick it up within 5 days they start charging you mad storage fees. I made that mistake once, and won't do it again. It's probably better just to pay up front.

You might want to consider shipping from Miami. Sometimes it's cheaper to drive a little further. I know the plan tickets are alot cheaper from there too.

Shipping in from Jacksonville has the car going thru PR. If you ship from Fort Lauderdale or Riviera Beach, the car will come directly here and there is less chance of damage and theft. When it gets here you can get one of the local expediters to do it for you. They can get it done quickly for a few bucks and less headaches for you.
