Hi,

I've interested in knowing whether there is a car ferry service that operates between St Thomas and San Juan, Puerto Rico. If so, any information regarding schedules and pricing would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

There is a ferry that runs two weekends a month between STT and SJ. They are, for the most part, capacity driven. Meaning that they may cancel a scheduled run for lack of interest. So definitely call in advance to insure that they will be operating. I believe that Islander has included their info. in the St Thomas guide, but for convenience their no. is 776-6282. Happy ferrying!

Thanks for the quick response. If you don't mind please confirm this is a CAR ferry. On the ferry schedule I saw it look like just a people mover.

Thanks again,
John

Unfortunately it's not a car ferry, people only. I don't know of any way to get a car from PR to STT except to ship.

Only CAR Barge for movng car and driver and passengers is the STT to STJ ferry. The ferry between St. Thomas and Puerto Rico is people and I suppose things that you could carry with you/packages and that sort of thing.

You could using a shipping company as Mary suggested. But the car goes with the ship you go via plane or the people ferry if you choose.

Thanks Islander,

Does the same hold true for St Thomas - St Croix? Only a people ferry?? If so, what if I bought a Toyota at the dealership in St Croix, live in St Thomas, and need to get it serviced?

Best regards,

John

If you lived on St Thomas, I think it would probably not be a good idea for you to buy a car at a dealership on St Croix. There is no way to get a car back and forth from STT to St Croix. As Islander said, the car ferry exists between STT and STJ only. There are plenty of car dealerships on St Thomas for you to choose from so you probably needn't worry about that.
What I would spend some time considering is that one of the realities of island living is not having the same type of mobility and range of choices that you have living in the contiguous 48. For instance, within 30 minutes driving time from my home I have probably well over 100 auto dealerships, not to mention all the supermarkets, malls, bakeries, chain stores, car repair places etc etc. That variety is not available in the USVI. It's one of the things you choose to do without if you live in the Virgin Islands.
Good luck!

John,

St. Thomas - St. Croix ferry is a passenger ferry. The only Car barge for car and people is St. Thomas to St. John. Barges for transporting goods do exisit between these islands and between these islands and the Caribbean and the USA however they are cargo vessels. Perhaps you can some how talk your way onto going with the cargo - but I am not sure that would work.

Why not buy your Toyota on St. Thomas if you plan to live on St. Thomas?? Otherwise inquire as to whether the company that sells Toyotas on St. Thomas would service your St. Croix bought Toyota - I would imagine they would - but you can call the lot you are buying the car from on St. Croix and ask about it.

I can't imagine it would be terriably convinient to cargo ship your car to St. Croix everytime you needed a tune up???

Thanks again Islander,

The only authorized Toyota dealer I saw in the yellow pages was in St Croix. On a seperate note my realtor was also talking about buying a Toyota and said she has to go to St Croix. If you know of an authorized dealer on St Thomas I'd appreciate it.
Otherwise, I'll call the dealer in St Croix and see how they handle.

Best regards,

John

John,

Quite rigth you are, only saw Toyota St.Croix in the directory. That will be a pain going back and forth. Call the dealer ask about how the shipping goes and whether they might offer you a discount since you'd have to ship it to St. Thomas; not sure they would buy into that knowing you can't get it in St. Thomas, but all the same Puerto Rico has Toyota dealerships and could ship to St. Thomas as well. So try and see. Also ask about the servicing.
