Car dealers

I am moving to St. Thomas in early January and will be buying a mid-size SUV to ship there. I looked at www.viphonebook.com and discovered that many major brands have dealers on the islands. Does anyone have any suggestions about dealers and quality of service? Are the warranties on cars purchased in the mainland US honored by USVI dealers?

I am considering Mitsubishi, Ford, and Toyota. I noticed that Nissan does not have a dealer there.

Thanks for your advice!

Factory warranties are honored at their respective dealerships here. Some aftermarket warranties may be difficult to have honored. And as far as quality of service, if it is a factory authorized dealer, all of the mechanics have to pass the proper tests and be fully qualified before they can work for that dealer.

Why not just purchase a vehicle here? The amount that it would cost you to ship and then inspect and register and then pay road tax for....you're better off to get one here. I mean, yes, our prices here are much higher than the States, but you can get some really good deals when someone is leavingisland and "must" sell their car before they leave. I just bought my wife a 2002 Jeep Wrangler Sport, with all the goodies and a hard and soft top, for over $2,000 less than what Kelley Bluebook said it was worth in the Sates. If you already had a car that you wanted to ship, that would be one thing, but there are so many for sale here, that I would save the hassle and get it here.

Thanks Ronnie and Marty:
I appreciate the advice. My company has a "shipping allowance" that would pay for me to ship 1 vehicle to the island. So, that is why I was considering purchasing one in the states and letting them pay the shipping costs. From visiting St. Thomas during one of the tropical storms, I concluded that I'd want to bring a mid-sized SUV (rather than my current two-door sports car).

The car situation is one of the many things that I am working on accomplishing prior to getting to St. Thomas. From reading the posts and speaking with people, it seems like finding an apartment is a true challenge. Because I don't want to get "stuck" with something undesirable for a year lease, I wanted to get a temporary furnished apartment while I take time to look around. If you all have any suggestions or comments about moving and living in St. Thomas, I certainly appreciate hearing your thoughts.
