A friend of mine who knows that I can't afford to stay in pricey hotels while I look for housing on St. Thomas suggested that I check out the cabins and camping on STJ. I'm having a hard time finding out the rates and I was wondering if anyone has any info on these places? Also, how much is the ferry from STT to STJ with and without my car? Does the ferry go there daily? If so, how often?

Caneel Bay is expensive - its a resort. Cinnamon Bay is the camp area! Visit them online at:

Ferry is $3 each way to Red Hook and $7 to Charlotte Amalie. The car barge is $35 round trip only runs to Red Hook. If you are there for a while there is a booklet of tickets you can buy - they work out cheaper per passage then paying each trip. Check the schedule at

Thanks Islander...I looked up Cinnamon Bay and even the bare sites are almost 30$ a night...Is there any way I can just take my own tent and camp not on owned property?

Juni, if you can't afford $30 a night while you get settled, well, maybe you better rethink your plans.

Linda... Yes, I can afford 30$ a night but I'm trying to be as frugal as possible so that I can still have money to put down 1st, last, deposit, pay for all of the taxes on my car and still eat ...No, I'm not rich but I've saved quite a bit for this...

I apologize if I sounded non-helpful. Maybe your best bet would be to come down for a week or so to scout out the situation. You could schedule some interviews, rent a car and look around, sort of get the feel of the islands. When is the last time you were here?

Hello Juni,
I am certainly not one to encourage people to camp on beaches however it is not illegal. Here is some info.
Another person had asked about the legalities of camping on beaches - here is what I had found out from Housing, Parks and Recreation.
For St. Thomas/Water Island, you can not camp on Magens Bay, St. Thomas without securing a permit/permission from the Parks and Recreation Department. All other beaches were camp at your own risk. You can call them at (340)774-0255.
St. John - no camping in the National Park which includes several beaches unless at designated campgrounds.
St. Croix: You can not camp on beaches that are known Sea Turtle Egg Laying Beaches - like Sandy Point for example. You can call them at (340)773-9696 if you want to ask more questions.
No one would tell me camp at this beach; they did say which ones you could not and said at your own risk for others.
