They're grocery stores. They also got hit with massive fines very recently due to prices not scanning properly. I think the stores are dirty & dislike the atmosphere in them.

I've gotta agree with Trade. In my overall experience as a customer (it's the first grocery I frequented in these islands some years ago) there has been consistent low quality and a tendency to over charge.

HOWEVER, in my opinion these facts may or may not be relevant to whether the job you are considering is a good one. It's all a part of due diligence, though.

Best of Luck,

Don't get to conftarble Pueblo was in Bankruptcy early this year and a local Businessman from Puerto rico acquire the Chain from Bankruptcy court. What i could tell you is that Pueblo is the Oldest Supermarket Chain in Puerto rico is just to be the pride of the Caribbean but with the entering of Walmart, Costco, Sams Club, Big K-marts in Puerto rico they have driven the Pueblo stores to reinvent their business model to survive. I know personally the new owner of Pueblo he was my neighbor for 15 years when i grew up there and i am still friends with this son At this moment all the stores are getting revamp and remodel specially in Puerto rico last i talk to my friend which works for his dad and he is the vice president he told me that they hope to make the stores in the USVI better and sale them. I will watch very closely here in Puerto rico they have sold 4 of their stores to local chains. I also know that walmart is very eager in entering the USVI what i have been told is that Walmart which owns Amigo chain in Puerto rico is planing to open an amigo in STT. In regards to opening a full size Walmart in the USVI they have been very hesitant because of USVI permits and Govt of the USVI does not want a Walmart to drive out more local business also is the cost of energy.

I do without before I check Pueblo's stock, but if the stores improve I'm willing to reconsider my position.

In March when we were there, we were told that they are owned by the same people that have Plaza Extra. They also said that the one in Golden Rock was cleaned up. My wife stopped there and said that it was a lot better.

You believe what you like. Until I read or hear differently I believe that they were sold separately.

I haven't noticed the golden rock pueblo being any cleaner, definitely not better. I go there only when i have too, doing most of grocery shopping elsewhere. I can honestly say its the first grocery store where I don't fell that safe. It smells awful and always seems sad and creepy inside it. Every single employee in there seems miserable.

I have known the Pueblo stores from back in the 80's and have no memories of anything nice. I NEVER shop there - yuk - dirty, pricey and nasty in general. We have many other options that allow for me to make alternative choices.

Well, it was World Fresh Market & there were Arabic men in the store walking around & talking in Arabic after the last sale last year. I don't know if it would be an improvement if the Puerto Rican owners bought it back as it was disgusting when they had it before. Appeared to me as a total lack of respect for the USVI since the Pueblo stores in PR were very nice, or at least the 3 or so I had seen over there.
Years back they closed the nicest one which was in Four Winds & was always clean & well kept & left us with the nasty Long Bay & the Nisky area stores.

Before the bankruptcy, they were celebration a major anniversary of Pueblos in the VI and a reporter asked the then president, 'how come the VI Pueblos were so dirty compared to the ones we see when we go to Puerto Rico', his answer. and I swear I could not belive my ears, was."You haven't seen all the Pueblos in Puerto Rico"

Really makes you want to go out and buy something at a Pueblo that you'd put in your mouth and swallow, doesn't it?

I have always been happy to live near Plaza West. It isn't even necessary for me to shop at 4 stores to complete a meal as so many people complain about. I can only presume that Plaza West usually isn't their primary grocery store. I do sometimes shop at Cost-U-Less, but not because I have to.

We also shop almost exclusively at Plaza. If we are going to KMart anyway, we buy paper goods there and I like to go to Cost-u-Less once in a while just to "shop", but for regular weekly shopping, Plaza is fine for us.

I think the Golden Rock Pueblo has improved a bit, just a little bit, recently. I have also encountered employees who seem to be about as happy as any other place. I personally think the employees at Plaza, Sion Farm are the most "aloof". I don't shop at Pueblo much and wouldn't consider buying meat or dairy, but sometimes when I am looking for something and just can't find it, I go everywhere!!

I have been a frequent shopper at Pueblo Marimar, San Juan. THAT is about the most disgusting grocery store I have ever seen. The last time I was in SJU, I think it was closed down.

Also, I worked for a wholesaler on St. Thomas for a while, and I have been in the back room of all of the big grocery stores, and believe me, it almost makes you want to stop eating, period! The back room of Pueblo Long Bay was actually the cleanest of all.

In my opinion Pueblo has gotten better. I t has the least expensive produce, coffee filters and frozen lemonade. Some times the specials are good deals.

They're good deals if you they actually ring up the special price at the register...they've been fined twice in STX this year as I recall for not ringing up their published sale prices.

Hey Ronnie, I have spoken many times with one of the principal owners from Chicago, I specifically asked about affiliations, he said, the Pueblo markets in the USVI, are not affiliated with Puerto Rico Pueblo stores.
