Any good camping spots (free, with showers??) on the island? Cheap hostel? Homeless shelter?

No free camping spots -- no free showers except the rain - no cheap hostels ,youth or elder, the homeless shelters are already overwhelmed with needy people -- might be better where you are.

Which island?
I spent a week at www.mtvictorycamp.com and loved everything about it. It wasn't free, but it's hard to beat $30/night. That was with my own tent, not the tree house bungalows they have set up, which are more like $100 or so per night. You can use their cooking facilities and bathroom. The shower is solar and has no roof, so you can watch the stars while you get clean. It was a fantastic week, and I'd go back in a second.

Mt. Victory is great, but it is also very much off the beaten path. You will have to figure out transportation.
