Campground at Neltjeberg
Saw in FB today a proposal for a campground in the bush behind Neltjeberg Beach. The pitchforks and petitions are already out from the locals who oppose ALL development
Good - to the petitioners and pitchfork-wielders! Some places should simply be left alone in their natural beauty ... Can you post a link to the site?
Another one bites the dust.
I'm of 2 minds. If it's kept small, environmentally friendly and user friendly, maybe.....
People crap and throw trash there all the time since it's become more popular so maybe having a presence there will stop some of that but I'd be concerned with septic waste outflow, runoff and damage to an already stressed marine environment. I've seen the brown runoff water collect there and in Dorothea Bay after heavy rains, extending all the way out and past Inner and Outer Brass Islands.
Is it going to create noise, how are they going to handle the road, parking, security, lights on beach, etc. ? Whole buncha questions! Plus has to be approved by CZM (we know they'll give anyone a permit) and hopefully ACOE, EPA, etc.
I haven't seen anything built by Tillet that's been environmentally responsible.
I don't care one way or another but people's comments about the project are borderline insane.
I read the page and the comments but didn't see how to comment in return. I'm very ambivalent about the proposal and although my initial reaction is NO - and primarily for the reasons noted by Alana in her post - I'ill definitely be keeping an eagle eye out for the application, the details, and how it's handled - as I'm sure will many others who have the same concerns.
I have a feeling that this is not going to be an application which will have an easy passage.
Ha, Sparty!
You should have seen the local turnout when they wanted to build a huge dock, a helipad, in order to develop Inner Brass. They had to change the venue where the CZM meeting was to take place to a larger school auditorium and it was standing room only. Against the project. It never went thru.
This guy Tillet may be a sneaky Pete, so he bears watching.
Hope Off the Grid has a good motor for their food truck or once it's down there, it may not be moving back up.
Are they seriously considering moving from Sapphire location or adding this additional one? It'll definitely impact those living in and around that location and the road usage.

I'm on FB and was signed in. I may try later.
OTG has a second location already at Coki. I saw advertisements at Tillet Gardens for a third location there, Neltjeberg may be 4
I think OTG is trying to compete with the St Thomas Restaurant group for numbers of outlets...
I don't have any real feelings about Neltjeberg. I have never been there. But it is interesting that one of the big reasons people don't want anything there is because they want their dogs to be able to run free. Personally, I think dogs should poop in their own yard, not on a beach...
Excuse me while I get my flame-retardant suit on and pop some popcorn....;)
Unfortunately, it not only dogs that poop down there and many leave their trash behind.

THIS! No flaming from me. People have a ridiculous notion that the beach belongs to them.
Is this the Angel LeBron Parcel?
Let's see - Frenchmans Bay was undeveloped now it has a beach Bar [Abi] on what was a pristine sandy beach -- Botany Bay has a guard house -- Lindqvist is now a Magens Bay Authority dictatorship -- Great Bay is now a Ritz timeshare beach -- Turtle beach is behind locked gates at Water Point Sensi Beach is fenced off - the Governor wants to give Mandahl Beach away ---- ???? ---- sure, develop all the beaches, and let the really rich people keep putting gates up on the STJ beaches that aren't NPS - it is a fabulous plan and sure to benefit all Virgin Islanders.
Off the Grid opted out due to the public outcry.
Now he is going to "cure cancer" with cannabis down there. I was willing to at least listen to proposal but if his actual plans include taking advantage of cancer patients I will be fighting him too

Where'd that come from with the "cannabis?"
Thought another poster mentioned that and not Tillet.
Not on Facebook so can't check unless link provided.

Maybe that comment was flippant but the beaches of the USVI do in fact belong to the people of the VI.
Anyway, I've just read the FB thread to date and it's been quite an interesting read. I rather agree with the contributor who commented that Mr Tillett's first mistake was throwing out the concept on social media when apparently there are no real plans in place. Campground segueing into a cannabis oil healing center for cancer patients? A 30 year lease from whom?
His second mistake was/is responding belligerently and sarcastically to those who happen to disagree with him while at the same time claiming his openness to "discussion". You just can't talk down to people and then expect them to join in a kumbaya session at Tillett Gardens with pan flutes accompanying the wafting of the palm trees.
Smart of OTG to disassociate themselves.

The link has already been posted.
The property is actively listed for sale so something will happen with
it at some point. What exactly remains to be seen and as does what type of permit application is applied for and allowed by CZM.
The landowner does have a right to sell and paying multiple property taxes a year, unless owner is extremely wealthy can be a hardship. Not to mention liability issues.
It's just sad to see another undeveloped beach go as Exit Zero points out.

"Unspoiled north shore oasis consisting of 2 acres of pristine beach front land w/sandy beach studded w/coconut & sea grape trees. An additional 9.3 acres extends into a tropical forest w/flat topography; over 11 acres total (3 parcels). Setting is enchanting..only the sounds of swaying palms, crashing waves & pelicans plunging into the surf can be heard. Ideal for private estate or eco-development."
Look, Lindqvist was headed for development- house(s), condos, hotel. While I wasn't in favor of the government spending money there, without a LAND AND WATER USE PLAN these Virgin Islands are subject to the whim of every flim-flam man and legit developer.
I meant they believe they are THEIR personal beach
The property is actively listed for sale ...
Which begs the question of Mr Tillett referring to an alleged 30 year lease on the property ...

I guess if someone has $6.5 Million dollars to spend for a parcel on such a beautiful beach, building an infrastructure and pitching some tents would be an attractive business plan. The ad mentions an R-1 zoning on one parcel off the beach - the beachfront parcel is zoned W-1 - so would there have to be a zoning change as well as CZM permits ?
Is this the right forum for this or will it be moved?
He has claimed the parcel he has leased is not for sale.
