Cabs on St. John
Are there many cabs on St. John? Are they expensive? Are they in somewhat of a demand to get around on the island? I'm planning on a move there and am considering driving my car as a cab. Thank you very much for your help.
As far as I know (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) you need a taxi medallion to operate a taxi on St. John. There are no medallions for sale, unless you purchase one from a cab driver who is retiring/going out of business. Each year, they auction off a taxi medallion to veterans, and if often goes for thousands of dollars. Two were auctioned off this year for $21,000 and $20,000.
Hey Andrea
You are correct - sorry JoeK you can't just operate as a taxi - nice try though.

Yep I saw a medallion advertised in the paper recently on St John. I think they wanted $35,000 dollars for it. Then you would need to spend another 25 to 35,000 for a suitable vehicle.

And I believe you need to hold a VI drivers license for 3 years before being allowed a taxi license.
Hello Joe,
There are a good bit of taxis on St. John; most are the open air, safari truck variety. Some consider the taxi rates in the VI to be pricey; the taxis charge per person and per destination, they aren't metered. Taxi rates are set by the VI Taxicab Division, you can review the rate sheet for St. John at http://www.vinow.com/stjohn/getting_around_stj/taxi.php. If you are interested in researching this idea more, licensing, medallions etc. you might call the VI Taxicab Division and get information. Try (340) 774-3130 and ask to be transfered to Taxi Division.
