Building on Halfpenny Beach
Does anyone know what the abandoned two-story building with the first-floor arcaded porch is on Halfpenny Beach? It looks like it may be a hotel that was put out of business by Hugo.
I don't know what it was but I do remember seeing it on our past vacation there and wondered the same thing. It does appear to be abandoned from hurricane damage. Wasn't that property for sale?
Isn't it Ha' Penny?
That is how it is usually pronounced.
A Google search on "St. Croix" and both beach spellings finds 143 hits for Ha'Penny and 60 for Halfpenny. I've also seen it spelled Halpenny.
On St. Croix maps it's spelled "Half Penny".
A little Internet research reveals that the "Ha' Penny" is another spelling for the British "Half Penny" which was first issued in the early 1200's.
Little did I know.
Actually, it's Manchenil Bay Beach. And the structure is being remodeled into what looks like condos. (Ha' Penny Beach is the beach beyond the Ha' Penny Club, in other words Ha' Penny is to the left, and Manchenil Beach is to the right at the end of the road with the Pink pillars).
JHark,
Thank you for identifying the building. Can you say anything about its history?
Yes, you are right. This is Manchenil Bay Beach. St. Croix maps sometimes confuse me.
I just moved to STX last January, so I can't say first hand. Word is the building was to be a conference center/hotel. I heard that they abandoned the project; probably after Hugo. I live on Ha' Penny Beach, and run on Manchenil beach almost every day. About in Feb or March they started working on it. Local talk says it will be condos.
That's about all I know. At least it won't be abandoned any more.
