We like to snorkel and will probably want to go to Buck Island frquently when we MOVE TO ST. CROIX. Can you hire a boat, maybe out of Chaney Bay, to just take you over, leave you, and then come back at a certain time to pick you up? Or are there restrictions on who can even approach the island? It is such a nice beach that it would be fun to just spend the day.

Commercial vessels need a concesion permit to operate within the park bounderies. So you will have to use one of the daysail vessels.

Unless of course you pay someone to take you there and pick you up without a permit (his risk). But who says he's comming back.

Thanks. That's exactly what I want to know. One more question. If we have our own boat, are we allowed to moor/pull up to the beach side of Buck Island? Not commercially, just as private citizens.

Currently the rules on mooring at Buck Island say .."There are balls on the east side of the island. (snorkel trail) They are free for day use only and limited to boats under 42 ft.. It goes on to say that anchoring is permitted on the sandy west side of the island.

Check out sail-on-line.com (go virgin islands)

Was on the island this past week, and they now require non commercial boats to have a pass. You just need to make application and pay the nominal fee.

i went to buck island a few years ago, the coral is amazing, but............................... our guide took us thru the coral so fast we didnt get to injoy it. we were told he would carry a life ring and could hold on to that if we got tired, well................... thats fine if u can swim fast enough to get too it. so be careful who takes you out on trip. maybe hotel people could suggest someone. its well worth the money to go.
