Broker needed
I need to hire a broker asap to get my car street ready for when I arrive in STX on Monday. I believe my car is already there. I contacted Lee Fleming already but I'm still waiting on a complete quote to have my car processed. Can someone please recommend a good broker that I can call. I'd like to have my car ready when I get there.
Thanks,
Darren
Lee will do a fine job.
Get used to the islands. Getting a complete quote for anything isn't likely to happen.
It is going to cost you between $1,000 - $2,000 for taxes and fees. More if your car is not US made and subject to additional import duties.
While you shop around rember that you may inccur $50 a day storage fees while you car is parked on the dock.
Also having spent several days at the DMV getting the paper work done to sell a car any reasonable fee you have to pay Lee to get your car registered is well worth it. Just driving down the road to the DMV with all the axel busting speed bumps is a royal pain.
Good luck!

Darren,
It's Wednesday afternoon. You "think" your car is on STX. You want to be able to drive it when you arrive on Monday.
Registering a car in the VI is a complicated business requiring someone to stand in line at numerous places to pay fees and obtain paperwork. If Lee can help you he will but you are probably not his only client. It is high season so it may be difficult but you might want to try to reserve a rental vehicle beginning Monday.
Just another reason you don't want to get involved in dealing with the DMV.
I purchased a new automobile in December from a local dealer on STX and they still haven't been able to get the DMV to issue my plates. I have now been driving the car for 75 days on temporary tags.
Take any bad experience with a DMV you have ever dealt with state side and multiply it by five and that is a good day on STX.
Even the long term Crucians hate dealing with the DMV!!!!

My car is "scheduled" to arrive on STX on Saturday. I have a rental reserved. I spoke to Lee for about a Half an Hour today and we are all set. If the car arrives as planned on Saturday it "should" be ready by Wednesday.
Thanks,
Darren
beatrice,
Call the shipping company daily for a status update on your car. It took our two extra weeks to be located when it didn't arrive on the day(s) it was supposed to. There's another good motivation for making these calls that we learned from experience -- the VI Port Authority starts charging you high-cost rent if your car stays at the port for more than three business days without being claimed, even if one of those days is a holiday when they aren't open!
Paying Lee will save you more than his fee in the time you will have to attend to other needs related to moving. We had a letter pefect experience in getting our car legal on island (aside from paying the port authority ransom fee) -- it only took two of us one full day and eight different stops to get the car insured, inspected, and registered. Heck, just knowing which office needs cash and which accept checks and credit cards is info worth paying for -- it can be darn frustrating to find yourself $5 cash short at an office that won't accept any other form of payment.
Good luck, and happy driving!
