Just wondering how a VW bug would hold up on the roads in STT?? Any suggestions. It is in great shape. Also wondering how they calculate the taxes on the car when you bring it. Do they actually weigh it?? Thanks

Hello Lynne,

There are VW bugs here, the old ones and some of the newer ones.

Taxes:
Personal Use Tax: equivalent to the Value of the Car minus $1000 times 4%. The value of the car is determined by the Blue Book Value if the car is older or the purchase price for new cars.

Road Tax: 16 cents per pound

You will pay 3.5% of the Book Value or the Bill of Sale which ever is greater on cars made outside the U.S. or cars that contain foreign made parts.

The weight of cars is written in the decal inside the driver's door, I would quess that's where they get the weight from.

Hi Islander,
Thanks for the info. I will be there about 10 months for the school contract so I don't know if it would be worth it to bring the car sounds like alot of money. Any ideas on other options?? Scooters mopeds and such. I will be traveling around to schools during the day not sure how many. Help from anyone would be great Thanks.
We will be visiting in late May to check out things.

Hello Lynne,

Sell your car. Buy a used car on island. Sell it when you leave. Buy another car when you get back to the states. Or keep your car in the states in storage and then my suggestion would still be to buy a used car for use on island and sell it when you leave.

Scooters aren't a very good option (terrain of the island is mountainous, roads steep, short rain showers....)

Can anyone tell me the names of some car transport co that may leave out of the Northeast. I live about 20 miles south of Boston. The company with the job i am looking at will allocate $800 for car transport or buying a car there. i find it hard to part with my car since I just spent alot on a new transmission. I would be willing to drive it to NY or such. I see tropical is out of Fl that would be a long haul for us.
Thanks much
Lynne

Hello Lynne,

I believe New Jersey is an option with Crowley. http://www.crowley.com/
