There are five or six tiny baby kittens found abandoned in the rubble behind the OfficeMax at Sunny Isle St. Croix. I fed them my tuna sandwich I had packed for lunch. They are hungry. I also gave them water. Later in the day, I gave them some dry food, and a can of cat food. PLEASE HELP THEM. I want to bring them home but, I can't. If I call the animal shelter, they will be killed. Damn the cold soul who left them there to die.

Take them to the Shelter. They'll die for sure where they are now & it won't be a pleasant way to go.

I don't understand the comment that if you take them to the shelter they will be killed. The shelter does the best they can to make strays healthy and adopt them out. I am not a cat person but I know many people who have adopted kittens from the shelter. It is not true that all the shelter does is kill animals (as one local vets commercials would have you believe) - they work very hard to save every life they can.

And.......Cute little kittens are easier to find homes for than adult cats. The shelter will try to adopt them out and make sure they're getting food, water, and attention.

The only reason our local humane society wouldn't take a kitten that had been abandoned at my daughter's job was because it was so tiny it still needed to be nursed. We begged them, but they said they had a policy. So... we did the whole eyedropper feeding until we could get it to take 'formula' from a tiny baby bottle. Finally got it old enough to take soft food. Maybe that's the reason the shelter wouldn't take these kittens? If you explained that they can eat food they might reconsider. I honestly can't imagine them turning away a helpless kitten. They'll be run over if they don't get rescued soon!:-(

so whats the latest on the kittens, did you take them to a shelter? Can somebody on STX go take a look for them and help them out?

The kittens are still there. I feed them daily, and give them water. The seem to be a bit more energetic today. They LOVE tuna! I wish I could keep them, but, I can't. I have no way of getting them to a vet, or shelter.

There was an article in Friday's Avis about the Sunshine Foundation on St. Croix (connected to Sugar Mill Vet in Princesse) and their "Trap, Neuter, Return" feral cat program. They provide traps to people for a deposit, and then neuter the cats, but then release them...which is still not helping the problem of finding them a home, but is better then leaving them there to just repopulate. Maybe they would keep them there in the hopes of someone adopting them.....

I agree, w/ the trap &(actually, I was told spay)the cats.
I have contacted & emailed back & forth w/Erika of the stt HS, who has also contacted Joe Aubain , I am awaiting their decision regarding the use of Feralstat Trade suggested.
Feralstat is birth control for cats, more for the one that got away.

I don`t know what would be worse for the kittens, a mongoose, dog, or cruel kids!

Call the shelter and they will send a volunteer to go get them. They stand a better chance there than feral.

IMHO

we were able to capture 5 kittens and turn them over to the vet who hopefully will find them a home. Anyone interested in adopting one or all of them, call Duke Deller DVM Frederiksted 340-277-4781. They are adorable, approx. 4 weeks old.

there may have been six. But we moved stuff to find anymore that might have been there. I think we got them all. Kudos to Vet Duke Deller.
