Blatant Racism - STT STJ Ferry
Granted the OP should have proper ID for the local rate, when asked to show proof of residency.
However that does not excuse the fact that she saw many people of color receiving the local rate without showing ID of any sort - which is the whole point of the OP's posting here.
The OP is saying that people of color are being waved through at the local rate while she is asked for specific local ID to prove that she is indeed, local, and she claims that that difference in treatment is based upon the color of the OP's skin. The quality of the ID is separate discussion, but that is not the point being made here.
Thank you. No sense in attacking *why* I don't have an ID. Just for logic game fun- owning a set of keys with a Cost U Less card doesn't imply that I am a driver as having keys doesn't require they have a car key. I'm sure plenty of carless people have house keys, PO box keys, etc.
I am fine paying the $2.00 "fee" for not having an ID- but do the same for everyone. Their excuses of, "oh I see them around" are just as good as any excuse of why I don't have an ID.
I've thought of gratuity at restaurants as also being selective racism in regards to having to pay more/pay less (despite after tip it truly being the same in most instances). The difference being that tables don't see other tables' bills. Can you imagine if a local white and local West Indian table were next to each other and only the latter received a gratuity charge and they were able to see each others bills (all other factors equal, number of people, etc.)? Oy. Outrage. Unfortunately this selectivity is in broad daylight, daily.
Hmmm, I gave a white lady a local discount because I had seen her around. It's actually more customer service friendly to treat customers with personal attention than as strangers. Who's to tell anybody who they have or haven't seen around? Imagine how long it would take to get your ticket if they asked and required every local to produce valid ID? I can hear the shouting and cursing already.

In your original post, you called them "a set of car keys." For logic game fun, tell us how that implies using them on something that is not a car! LOL!!
Sweetie, nobody is attacking you. I just suspect there is more to this story about why you're not getting what you want than racism.
Yes, there is racism in the Virgin Islands. Since you were bahn heah, this should not surprise you. As a white transplant, the best way I've found around it is to be nice to people and get to know them. Thank them for helping you and remember their names. (Side note, this will get people to be nicer to you anywhere, not just here!) The day comes when the people in the post office and bank know you by name, when the cashiers at the grocery store ask if you got a new job because you're dressed really nicely today, when you get called to the front of the line at BMV because you just have a quick transaction and they like you... and so on.
The sure-fire way to make sure I do NOT get my way is to act snotty and piss somebody off because I'm not getting my way, no matter the reason.
Like I said, call the people in charge and pursue your complaint if you want something to change -- and let us know what happens. Or call the Tradewinds, Daily News, or Source. I suspect you won't do that because you know you're not actually entitled to that discount.
Touche on the original post specifying they keys being car keys :@)
I still don't understand the concept of the conspiracy that I'm somehow not eligible for a VI DL. As another poster said, there are plenty of reasons for which one may want to keep their stateside DL. I simply do not want a VI DL and will graciously pay the tax of not having one.. as stated before.. if it's the standard.
As far as it being "friendly" because you have seen them around and customer service-- that's what I meant by them not even greeting people. I suspect if it truly were a friend/acquaintance they would greet them but many were just rung up immediately without a hint of recognition of the person-- price and prompt of ID coming from that of race only.
Anywho, I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the contact info.

No "conspiracy". Just don't be bleating if you're pulled over while driving for something even inconsequential and you're asked for your license and registration. You might get lucky and get away with not having a VI license but then again you might get ticketed. It's that simple.
