Biggest difference in day-to-day life in STT compared to US
Once one has negotiated a new job, a new car and a place to live; what do the residents of STT consider to be the biggest adjustment in their daily lives?
As a classroom teacher, it was initially difficult to understand what the students were saying, along with the local teen slang. I had to move around the classroom and get right up to a student's face and watch their mouth as they spoke in order to understand. I even had to ask for help with translation if a student's accent was particularly strong. I remember one day all the students came in and talked to me in their best 'fake' English accents--I could understand them perfectly! Three years have now gone by, and I consider myself 'well adjusted' 🙂
No highways, rarely exceeding 40MPH, driving in 2nd gear 90% of the time.
🙂
The quality of the food here can be disappointing (if what you want is even in stock.) Most fresh fruit and vegetables are well past their prime by the time they get here. Meat can also be dubious because it's not always kept at the proper temperature during shipping.
Getting used to saying "Good morning" even when entering a doctor's waiting room. Working harder than I ever had anywhere in the States. Getting used to trying to get directions from well-meaning folks who tell you to turn where the old market used to be that hadn't been there in 10 years. 🙂
