Bicycling/Bike Shop STX
Hi there,
I am moving to St. Croix in October, my plan is to use a bike for transportation instead of buying a car. I know that there is difficult terrain in certain locations but I am 26 and athletic, so I don't envision any problems. I have had a hard time finding info using Google so I was hoping some islanders could help me out. I assume there are bike rental places on the island, but are there any bike shops where I could purchase a bike. Do the bike rental places sell their bikes as well? If anyone has been to these places is there a decent selection or will my choice be between a single mountain bike and single road bike. Any help would be much appreciated because I need to figure out whether I should try and ship a bike through a freight company or order one off Amazon when I get there, if I'm not able to buy one on the island. Thanks.
This is another one of those times when a pmv would be good. There are no bike rental places. There are bicyclist here and a bike shop but the bicyclist stick mainly to south shore road and even that is pretty dangerous. The bike will be tough not because of the terrain, st croix is mostly flat with mild hills, for the most part. The problem is are roads. They are very NARROW & with lots of BLIND curves. Most of the roads are not save to ride a bike or walk or jog on. People only do these things in certain areas. So yes you can do it but as dntw8up says make sure you're an organ donor.
there is a bike rental place here - Geckos Island Adventure Tours. http://www.geckosislandadventures.com/
Stamina Sports sells bikes. I think triathletes use them. http://stamina-sports.com/. they have rentals too.
Definitely ship one down. Or you can buy one in the states and check it in as part of luggage on the airplane. The one bike shop I've been to on island doesn't have much selection.
It is very difficult to live on STX without a car...unless you live in town (either F'sted or C'sted). Not having a car will severely limit your employment and lifestyle choices since public transport is non-existent on a practical level, and taxi's are expensive. The cheap taxi's only follow a particular route so unless you live and work on that route, you may be out of luck.
I stand corrected, but I don't think that's the type of rental the guy had in mind, not at those prices. And its in f'sted.
Good evening Catch22Jacks,
Amazon won't ship a bike here. Their shipping to the USVI is limited to books, CDs, DVDs and the like. If you're hoping to have a private seller (Amazon marketplace partner) ship to you, call them to check their shipping policies and prices before you plan your purchase, to avoid any unfortunate surprises.
Good luck!
Hey Catch22,
Have you been on a visit before? I don't say it is impossible to get along without a car, as we did it for a while, but we happened to have lucked into a place to live that was VERY close to where we were working, with day time jobs and a generally safe area to walk to work. I also had good friends who were always willing to pick me up to take me grocery shopping or to do laundry. I do know someone who is using a bike as his main work commute right now, but his wife has a vehicle and if he has to run errands or if they go anywhere after dark, they can take her car.
If it is at all feasible for you to buy a car when you get here, I highly recommend that.
If you can't afford an "island" car, then you probably can't afford to live here.
Sorry to put it bluntly.
PMV's are always a good thing. Good luck in what you decide.
Hubby and I know a couple on the island who gave up their cars 10 years ago and only use their bicycles for transportation. They have little trailers that hook to their bikes for shopping. They live on the east end and ride their bikes all the way to the west end. Amazing. I don't know if I would want to do that but they do well.
i know a couple of people in princess that work downtown and ride bike all the time and gee they can afford an island car but don't want one, dude that owns the strip club next to benticks also rides bike all the time, i also know a few scooter people that swear by them
The only safe bike on the islands is stationary bike for exercise that can fit inside your house. Forget about the pot holes, gravel, Weeds as tall as houses on bends. You have Tourists that for some reason fail to stay on the left side of the road. The car rental companies put a decal on the inside of the windshield that says we drive on the left. (Not all tourists read and write English I guess)!
Checking a bike as luggage on airlines today is expensive. Some airlines charge as much as $175 each way.
