Best way to ship a car?

We are moving to St. Thomas in about six months and are looking to find the best way to ship our car there. I have heard that it is cheaper to ship your car there rather than buying one on the island. Does anyone know any prices or names of shipping companies and also has anyone had any bad experiences with getting their vehicle there? Good and bad stories are welcome!

Thanks,

Curtis

it isnt that difficult to bring it down, and you can sell it for as much as you have into it once it's here if you do decide to leave.
both crowley and tropical do weekly shipments, crowley seemed to be nicer to me as a first-timer [though it may have just been the secretary on that day]... they both have websites and online quotes.
it takes a little bit of cash and a full day in st thomas with taxes and customs and the like, but it's wroth it to have the car once youre here. especially in st thomas, it opens up your possibilities to many of the other areas of the island, where rentals are nicer and cheaper and safer [northside, etc]
email if you have any questions

Not sure if you made any final decisions yet, but we just brought a car down for the summer. It was cheaper than renting all summer and including the shipping costs and taxes, we can sell it for more when we leave. They have a very captive market here, and think a lot of their used cars. I suggest you ship yours, since it's an import the taxes are higher, but it is relative to yoour option of buying here. We used Crowley's to ship and then were referred to KJ 's Courier Service via this msg board. He dealt with getting the car, clearing customs, paid the taxes and got it all registered, washed and gassed up for us. Considering the fact that the computers were down when he went to get it registered and he had to go back, his $150. fee was a bargain. It wasn't worth us wasting our time, especially since we didn't know where to go etc.

Good luck to you.

KJ's phone number is 340 771.2469

Was wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether to ship a Volvo sedan to STX? I am relocating there in a few weeks and was planning on selling the car here in the States and buying something there after I get settled. How hard is it to find a good mechanic and parts, etc.??

My friend has a Volvo in STX. She has to order in her parts from the states. There are good mechanics, but no dealership. My advice would be to trade in your car in the states for something you would want to ship down. Maybe a Toyota or Honda. They have those dealerships there, as well as Jeep, GM , Dodge and Ford

What kind of dealerships and mechanics do they have on St. Thomas? I dont want to bring down a car if there is no one there that can fix it if it breaks. Oh yeah, how much is gas on the island?
