Choice was $49 a month and 99 for the router if you signed a 1 year contract otherwise $249 for the router. And,,,, it's only 156 download.

Maybe they think people are ignorant and don't know how to by a $50 cable router and hook it up themselves, but the won't allow you to provide your own. Instantly I thought "not going to use their service," so I'll check BroadbandVI and Innovative (Innovative's phone was down today) I'll update prices when I find out. I'm assuming AT&T wireless card will be the cheapest I've heard $60 and you can use it everywhere you go without a router.

I remember when cable companies made you purchase cable TV to get the internet and the scam pissed me off then so DSL got a lot of money before cellphones where cheap. Now that they allow internet without able TV I'm sure may have obliged. I just hope they aren't puling that scam here too.

Nothing changes until there's a discussion about it.

Cheers

some guy 18,

I'll admit it...I'm one of the ignorant ones. Maybe I can be forgiven because I am old.:) I have had an awful time with Choice, the same set up you were talking about. So I have decided to go with VI Broadband or Innovative DSL. I also want to send out a signal to other areas of my property, via router or radio.

So, here's my problem. I had a young man (hi Jeff) come out and look over my property. He said by all means Innovative was the best thing out there now, at least for what I want to do. I called VI Broadband, and they tell me Innovative DSL isn't as fast or nearly as reliable as they are. :S

Please let us know which one you decide to go with, and why.

Thanks,
Juanita

I have choice and so far is great very expensive. I have a phone line with innovative but so many people have told me that is not reliable and i cannot afford to be without internet for my business so i pay. I was thinking at first to get Satellite Hughesnet but i tested it here with one of my neighbors and when you get a cloudy day is slower than dial up. Innovative is always getting interrupted i don't trust them at all. Regarding choice here in peterborg i have very fast and reliable service but i will take a look at Broadbandvi it use to be in STT Ackley i heard that is good and cheaper.

One more question, and I will leave you all alone about this.;)

I live in Estate St. John, STX, on the south side of 75 about halfway between Chocolates BBQ and 79, (the road to Sunny Isle). The hill my house is on is about 75 feet high. The only one on here that I know is a reasonably close neighbor is boyd46. Does anyone else live near me, and what internet service do you use, and how do you like it? I am trying to decide between Innovative and BroadbandVI.

Thanks so much. I am making a decision today, and I truly will drop it!!! (Unless, of course, I can help someone else decide after my service is up and running.)

I live in Estate Cottage for now and have had Innovative DSL for about 3 months. I bought the cheapie plan as I don't need to do any video streaming or the like (at least not until NFL season) and the service seems to be fine now. I had a couple of nights at the beginning where the service would freeze or disconnect necessitating a reboot of the router or PC. I haven't seen this issue in the past couple of months though so I think all is well. One of my neighbors just bought Innovative's highest speed DSL & VI Broadband (he's bridging the connections for a house wire network storage, internet cameras, etc.) and he seems to be fine with both so far.

Some of you asked, but I didn't decide to get Internet.

A walk down the road to a free "hotspot" at the complex is enough for the wife and I. I may choose to get internet later but I'm assuming they are all charging 30+. What rates have you guys seen? I was paying $19 for very fast 750mbps down and 250mbps upload. If I need to be humble on the island then internet will be where I save.

I'd rather be humble and get out more than spend too much time online inside anyway.

cheers and beers

I have all 3, here is my rundown:

Choice is rough, when it works its fast but it rarely works as advertised. They started out offering 5mbps service, then had to drop it because they don't have the network infrastructure in place to support it. Now the highest they will sell is 3mbps but that is 3mbps down during very limited periods of time such as late at night etc. During slow times it drops down below 1mbps. The uplink (sending data) is always very slow in the sub 1mbps range, sometimes as low as 128kbps! The latency is very high, probably as high as Satellite which is not acceptable for some things I use my connection for (VOIP is affected, video chats are affected and online gaming won't work well on their connection). Overall it is a low quality connection.

Innovative is reliable to my house but it all depends on where you live. If it goes down you could be without service for a while, when I've had my phone line go down it took them 2-3 weeks to come out to fix it (I say it's been reliable because when my phone died it was voice only, the DSL stayed up, but if the line was fully cut etc. it would've been weeks without internet). Also it is slow, it is limited to 1mbps which is about 10 times slower than most stateside connections these days. They can't really ramp up at this time with the technology they have in place.

Broadband VI will sell you a 1.5mbps residential line I believe but unlike Choice you will get what you pay for consistently. 1.5mbps is still slow by stateside standards but it's the best you can reliably get right now in the VI. Their service is very good and if you go down they will likely have you back up and running faster than Innovative. They have had issues in the past with tower damage during storms that led to outages, although they say they've learned from those experiences and have done things to make sure that the outage times are reduced. Time will tell if this is true or not. For full disclosure, I am currently beta testing some next gen stuff for Broadband VI for free. The company I work for has a relationship with BBVI, and since I am a heavy internet user I was offered this opportunity to put their network through its paces. I don't get paid though by BBVI or anything like that but I do want to be open any percieved connections I might have to BBVI. So far the beta testing I've done has been impressive so they clearly have some great capabilities that they haven't released yet. They are the only ones who I feel can deliver the higher speeds that frankly are now required for medium to heavy internet usage in a reliable fashion going forward. Because of this I would definitely reccommend them as the first choice. My second choice would be Innovative although if you live somewhere with bad phone lines then this may not be as good an option. My third Choice would be "Choice."

Hope that helps.

Sean
