Hello! I will be moving to STT this March and have begun looking for a place to live. I would appreciate any advice on the best areas to look. I am hoping to get a monthly rental for the first month or two that arrive. I won't have a car and am mostly concerned about safety and location. Thanks so much for any local advice you can give!

Alexia:Hope you don't have trouble reading this post!! 😉 Sorry, just couldn't help myself! Did you scroll down and read the recent thread below on "Safe Places to Live?" You might also look at the ones about having a car...And to top it off, the Moving Guide on the navigation bar at the top of this page... Test is in the morning!

Hey East Ender, You are very clever! I have been reading much of the message board for a while and also the moving guide etc. so test away! I was just hoping for some advice straight from the source. I have had the best luck in the past asking local residents about the best "neighborhoods" to live in, they seem to have the most first hand info not always found on the web. So as an East Ender you must have some bias to that part of the island? Thanks for your response, and get your test ready, I'm always up for a challenge.

Hello Alexia,

While I like the northside of the island and would recommend it - that area is difficult to manage from if you are car-less. If you are working in town then some upper-town/northside areas like Mafolie would work as you could walk/hitch down to town. East End would be good if you are working on the East End. If you found an apartment relatively close to the main Red Hook area then you will be Ok without a car as you could catch a bus or do some shopping in that area. West End is good but requires a car.

Alexia: Do you see how diplomatic Islander is? Actually, the answer to what area depends on YOU. Some people live in one area and figure out how to get to work at the other end of the island. You will need to look around and see what is available when you are here...

Thanks so much. I really appreciate your information. I am a photographer and hope eventually to be able to do this sort of work on the island but am planning initially to try to find a job waitressing/bartending somewhere near where I find a place to stay. I really want to give myself time to get to know the island in and out as best I can before comitting to a long term lease. Like you said East Ender, the place someone will be most comfortable depends on THEM. So I hope to find the right place for me. Thanks again for your help!
