Bartending Jobs
Hello All,
I am from Sweet Home Alabama and I am very interested in moving to the Virgin Islands! Could you give me any advice on how to go about getting a Full-time bartending job, that's about all I know and I am great at it! I have also dealt cards for awhile Texas Holdem mainly, not the greatest at it, but I can do it! For instance where would I go, who would I talk to? Also I would need a place to live from about $600 to $800 is this possible in the Islands? Any advice would be great! Also is living in the Virgin Islands truly the dream that everyone thinks it is? I love to chit chat and make new friends so bring it on!

For bartending jobs, you generally show up at a restaurant/bar/resort and present yourself to the owner/manager. Turnover is high, so there are often openings available at most venues. There is one casino on STX that hires dealers as well as bartenders, etc. You will have trouble finding housing in the price range you mentioned, but you might get lucky or choose to have a roommate to keep your share of the rent within your budget.
Living in the islands is a dream come true for some and for others it may be less than they had expected and hoped for. Many people come. Some stay and many leave. Some of the ones who leave do stick around for 2-5 years before departing while others last only a few short weeks or months and then they are gone. Some people who come here never expect it to be "forever", so when they leave after a year or two their departure shouldn't be categorized in with the people who thought this was forever and then couldn't make it work out.
For bartenders and other service positions, it's a healthy mindset for new arrivals to come thinking it's an adventure and they are going to explore and enjoy the experience for however long they stay. It may last a few months or a few years or they may stay for decades. If you come with an open mind and no expectations set in stone other than that the weather will be warm all year, then you are more likely to enjoy what you find. Island life is different and even though this is a US territory, the culture of the people born and raised here is different from mainstream USA. Islanders aren't going to change who they are to suit newcomers, so you will need to be prepared to accept and work with what you find. If you can do that, come on down and check out "Paradise".
Thanks so much Alexandra! That was so sweet and straight to the point! Everythiing you explained pretty much sounds a whole lot like me! So in other words don't expect everyone to be as nice as us Southerners, just take what we can get, if we get a friendly Hello be glad huh? now now charlotte
The lobster Reef is unique even by StCroix standards. I think Kristie might do well in a more mainstream setting. But I do love the Lobster Reef.

There are many bar tending jobs available if you are experienced. Go on line and read about all of the wonderful St Croix restaurants. Jobs are there but housing is even more expensive than Mobile.
Welcome, Kristie!
Actually, I find Virgin Islanders to be among the nicest people I've ever encountered, and I've lived in almost every part of the U.S., including the South. No offense, but I never experienced any of that much vaunted hospitality or friendliness during my southern sojourn; maybe I just ran into the wrong folks. Here I enjoy pleasant and friendly interactions almost every time I go out , even in the face of sometimes really annoying situations (like the time the power went out at the ferry dock and the guy tells me, after I'd stood in line at least 25 minutes, that the credit card machine doesn't work, and his phone doesn't work, so unless I had cash (which I didn't) I wouldn't be going anywhere. We worked it out with my lending my cell phone for him to call my credit card number in to the main office. We were laughing and chatting by the end of the transaction.)
Anyway, best of luck!

Thanks MS INFORMATIOM,
I am a very experienced bartender several years of it! Thank you so much for your reply! I thought that StCroix was the least expensive islands to live on, just from some of the forums I have read! So maybe it isn't huh? Tell me more! Thank You again for the reply! Have a wonderful evening!
Islandlola,
Thanks for the info. That sounds more like it! Love to be around friendly helpful people! Can't wait to visit, I should be there in November! Wish me luck!
Of the 4 USVI, St. Croix is the least expensive to live on. But that doesn't mean it's cheap. And any rental bargains to be had require you to be on-island and looking hard.
They are seriously in need of bartenders and servers at the Deep End Bar at Tamarind Reef Resort and Green Cay Marina. They do a steady to heavy business and never have enough staff to handle the demand. Tips are pretty good, too.
Thanks Alexandra,
I will definately check them out when I visit in November! You have been a great help and I appreciate it so much!
