bad timing for a move
well, another Kansas citian planing to move to the islands...st. thomas...I have been a faithful reader on this message board, but haven't posted much...today I feel I need to throw a few quesitons out there...My husband and I are going to be part owners of a popular restaurant in Havensight. The plan was great, but now we have found we are pregnant! The problem with this is that who would possibly hire a "pregnant" worker in St. Thomas. ( I won't be working with my husband in the restaurant) I was also exploring the idea of taking care of some other kids in my home so I could raise mine. Is this rare in the islands? Is there a demand for "state" people with kids who need someone to watch their children while working? I am looking into getting a license now. It's been awhile since I posted, but we are the Lake Lotawana residents and my husband works for First Watch restaurant. (for the former kc residents) Of course, with the unexpected news of having a child while trying a whole new way of life scares me to death..anyone know about the prenatal/hospital care on St. Thomas? Thanks in advance. All of your posts have helped us plan our move thus far.
Which restaurant? Havensight Cafe, Delly Deck or The Great Wall? (Maybe the Harbor Club in Port of Sale Mall?)
Some un-asked for advice: I would be wondering why they are looking for partners to begin with. Then I would come down and look at the operation first. What's it like in the off-season? (Havensight is pretty dead when there aren't ships in)
Thanks for the concern. I don't mind "some un-asked advice". we have been to St. Thomas twice and the restaurant is the easy part. The part I am concerned with is finding something for me to do to supplement our income we make in the states together and adding a mouth to feed. From our trips there we did a lot of shopping of housing, groceries, and other costs of living so we know it's not cheap. The one thing I didn't research was the heatlhcare/hospital.
I can't speak about the baby part, but if I were to get sick, I'd go to Puerto Rico. I spent 6 days in the ICU at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, and I don't wanna go back...
The majority of locals have their babies at the hospital but the hospital certainly does have its ups and downs where care is concerned and this has been the case for the 20 years I've been here. I've personally had two very bad experiences there over the years.
As far as birthing is concerned, many of my friends have left island and returned to the mainland to have their babies, returning afterwards. Obviously this isn't an inexpensive proposition and, since it seems from your post that the restaurant isn't going to be able to support you both, may not be an option for you.
Can't help you with your thought aout running some sort of nursery but hopefully there are others who can give you the scoop. I'm sure there are strict guidelines, licenses to obtain, etc. etc. and since infant care is - in a sense - a very personal affair, you might be at a bit of a disadvantage being a newbie.
Truly hope that you've very seriously looked long and hard at being a restaurant partner, which is very tough here. I'm a little sceptical about your supposition that the restaurant "is the easy part!"
I'm trying not to throw curveballs at you but adapting to living here isn't easy. Your pregnancy, albeit a joyous event, isn't going to make your transition any easier.
The very best of luck to you and I'm sure others will be able to answer your questions more positively than I!
Hi Kellymac,
Another KC relocating 🙂 Well if you guy's want to get together for coffee let us know. Edgar has already left but there are 2 couples still here. It's kind of fun to talk and share all our hopes, and excitement (and fears etc) Good luck with your move and baby.
Hello Kellymac,
Congrats on the pregnancy! Mothers, with one or two children of their own, watching a couple other kids in their homes is common here.
There are several very good ob/gyns here; and many babies are born at the hospital. I have had several co-workers and friends have their babies born there over the years. Most recently friends had their baby and the care seemed great, nurses very helpful, doctor showed up quickly - as did the baby! There is a board user, Onika, who posted a little about her pre-natal care experiences over the last few months. Hopefully she will respond or perhaps you might PM her.

I hope I am not letting the cat out of the bag, but I think Onika will be a bit busy with her new bundle of joy! She seemed happy with the service and facilities at Schneider Regional (the new name!)
Congrats Onika and Petrus!
My OB/GYN doctor moved to STT last year. His name is Martin Dukes mayby you could look him hp whle you are doing your research. He practiced in Washington University out of George Washington University Hospital. I have another referral from my current doctor but I have to call back and get the name. so I will get back with you on that one.
ANYONE HEARD FROM ONIKA? HOW'S THE BABY?
I also seem to remember Teresa being a mom in the islands? and from kc I think?
any thoughts on "in house" child care? I have EXCELLENT references.
