Bacchus Closing?
Just heard that Restaurant Bacchus is closing.
Can anyone substantiate this?
More bad news!
i went there once and thought the food was great. of course that was years ago. i hope it does not close
I SERIOUSLY doubt it.
OP, that's a completely unfair post. Frankly, I don't know if the restaurant is closing or not, but do you have half an understanding about how a rumor like that can impact a business? Did you even read the stuff in The Avis about the trucking company this week that some Senator told the entire darn world was going out of business because of Hovensa? It was as far from the truth as truth can get. I understand that rumors are shared and passed around on this island, but in light of what we're dealing with here as an economy, maybe we could hold out for some facts before we go reporting the demise of individual local businesses on such an influential forum.
jabatl, its a fair enough question.
whats the worst that could happen, the false-rumor incites a near stampede of patrons all rushing the restaurant to get one last meal, perhaps?
Really, bghost? Rumors spread like wildfire down here. One person says, "I heard X closed," and by the time two more people here, it's a done deal. No stampede. Just go somewhere else.
And, if I were the owner of the business in question, I would not look at a 'rumor' stampede of business as a silver lining.
A RUMOR....is propaganda...it could be taken as fact or not.I wouldn't want the rumor my business was closing .Just as many people may NOT bother driving by as would be curious to visit. If your lively hood was impacted by traffic flow that rumor could indeed make the difference of profit or loss for the day/week etc...Loose lips sink ships.....:P:X.
Herald it from several employees. Wed next week is their last day...then WAPA is turned off. Hard to run a restaurant if there is no power.

Are "people here" really that *** ...
ETA: N'er mind. I already know the answer.
it was not open tonight.....I asked around....heard it is closed....hope its not true.
It is true, they have gone under. Talk to any restaurant people downtown. 🙁
This WASN'T a RUMOUR that I was citing so get a grip on it people! At least come of you!
Fact is that it was shuttered Thursday evening!
Certainly a very unfortunate event but a trend of things that have and are coming to STX if this government doesn't wise up.
sure more will follow
Food's been bad there for awhile. Sad, though. Used to be one of my favorite restaurants. Always hoped it would come back to what it once was.
Weds night will be their last night. It is closing.
Bacchus: Ate there maybe three times over the past seven or so years, wasn't really that impressed with it- high prices and a large type clientele base- we went there on special occasions- while I could afford to eat there regularly- we chose not to- it was more the "bang for the buck" factor. God Help them.
Yes, I am afraid that DixieChick might be right...What we CAN do is to support as many of our community establishments as possible. I rather like Bombay- excellent "bang for the buck" factor- it's been there quite a long time- or Junie's or Gertrudes...(Got a heap of good food in there for cheap). The plant closing isn't the larger part of this- probably is a tipping factor and nothing more- don't fool yourselves: WAPA is the biggest part.
I take exception to what Burris09 stated- "Honestly, I am very surprised the islands have lasted this long with the fake, know it all transplants down there. WOW".
If it wasn't for a major portion of us "transplants" and washashores- the financial woes here would have reached critical mass a long time ago. Sounds like you're a local who transplanted to somewhere else- waiting to return for your "ancestral rights" after a long absence perhaps? Or is it just the pot calling the kettle...
Was at Bombay last night and as usual, a great value.
They were actually turning people away who did not have reservations.....a great sign.
Bacchus is finished---closed, done.
Was at Cane Bay yesterday and went up to order a burger from Eat...All they had were crepes.
Not good.
In the 16 years we visited STX before moving here in 2005, only ate at Baachus's twice. So not gonna miss their overpriced menu.

I will miss Bacchus. But I missed it once the old owners sold it and move out to Cane Bay. But even the shadow of it was still good. I really don't think it was overpriced for nice night time dining. Never had a bad meal there. Only one other restaurant I can say that about is Galleon. Seriously most of the entree items were the same price as most other restaurants downtown for dinner and much better in quality. But I guess it's all in your preference. I think Savant is horrible, never once had a good meal there or good service. I refuse to even go with friends anymore.

I guess it definitely is all about one's preference. I love Savant, and it--along with Salud--are my "go to" restaurants when I want something a bit nicer. We've never had bad service or a bad meal there--except last week, when the ceviche of the day had clearly "turned." I told the server, she checked with the chef, and they threw the whole batch out (and, of course, took it off my tab). I think the courtyard there is one of the nicest places to eat dinner anywhere.

Agreed that my last few visits to Savant have been horrible. Salty, goopy, overpriced, inedible.
Is the same chef at Salud since it was sold recently?
Galangal is wonderful, but I'm afraid not long for this island. Same for Dashi. The downtown restaurants that don't serve the lunch biz crowd I fear are going to disappear.

Have to reply to this!
eat@canebay has nothing to do with Bacchus closing. Bacchus sold over 4 years ago.
eat@canebay serves brunch only on Sundays 11-4, at no point did we run out of burgers. We offer many things besides crepes.
Hope you'll be back for a burger, we plan on being here a LONG time:)

Dashi serves lunch.

Yeah, but I don't work downtown or eat lunch there. I eat dinner there. Dunno. It'd be nice to see them stick around. I don't know anywhere else to get oysters.
