Avocadoes and Other Local Produce on STT
Where's a good source to learn about the different varieties of Caribbean grown fruits and vegetables? The local spinach isn't the same spinach that's sold at Plaza, et al, so I would like a cheat sheet to help me identify local offerings so I can be more educated on what I'm buying. The Mango Melee on STX educated me on Julie Mangos, but I need something like that for other fruits!
Thanks!
You can always get a CSA share from ridge2reef . com an learn that way. 😀
Also contact UVI agriculture extension services and they may be able to help you.
Thanks, everyone for replies. I find it very odd that few people here know the species of the fruits and veggies - except the Julie mango!

Did they pay their bill at GoDaddy?
ridge2reef .org works!

It's always been ridge2reef.org. Jamison just made a typo.
You got duped into buying malabar spinach like us, more of a thickener to me...but Jamison likes it he can help you with that....
I think you are looking for Bloomsdale spinach.....
The STT Ag. Fair should be coming up in Nov., I think.
Anyone know the dates or did I miss it this yr. completely?

yep I goofed. Also Visfi.org is a good one for us too.
Oh,yearasta, it's fabulous that you know some names! I bought avocadoes today from Plaza - one was kind of brownish red and the other is green. From Dominica. Going to do a taste comparison.
The brownish red avocados are my FAVORITE...sweet and creamy

They're good but there are SO many variables in so many different kinds of veggies and fruits depending on where exactly they grow and in any particular season. You can have a bountiful crop of super tasty vegetables and fruits one or two years in a row and then go through a year with little to no production, and a taste variation even when you have a next good crop.
That's what makes local gardening so ever-challenging!
The challenge for me is the heat...stressing the plants....they are always withered when I get home. Thinking of covering the garden this weekend.
Yes, the brown one was much better than the green! On my way to buy more...
all the way from CA.????????????
The guy at Plaza Extra STT said they were from Dominica. Most were so ripe today I doubt many will buy. I made an avocado soup and still have one left for tomorrow that I will eat as is.
