automotive jobs and other ?s
My future wife (got 3 weeks left till the wedding) and are considering relocation to a couple of locations. We are toying with the idea of coming to the islands on an extended openended stay. I could tell you the reasons but I am sure every one has heard the same ones over and over. I am curious about jobs in the automotive field especially auto body repair, refinishing and estimating as i have about 10years experience in many different areas. Is there a need for emloyees with this type of experience in the VI. My wife is a student and would like to transfer possible to UVI and finish her degree (history major). Has any one transfered to UVI from another college?
We will actually be selling almost all of our possesions including our house before we move any where. I read on one website that you should plan on coming to the islands with enough money to live for 2 months. How much would be enough, and how hard would it be to find a month to month living condition (nothing fancy/ possibly furnished) We do not wish to move to the island expecting to pick up life as we have it now. We are both willing to work hard at a new life that is ours together.
Any advise, suggestions, or thoughts on things that we should consider would be appreciated.
Thank you, Logan
Don't know about St. Thomas, but we have auto dealerships and body shops on St. Croix. You should look in the on-line phone book.
Good Luck.
Hello Logan,
Congrats! I think Linda gave a great suggestion - visit http://www.viphonebook.com and search for car dealerships, mechanics, body shops ect and then make a list - and make some phone calls - see who offers the work that you do and then see if there are openings - if you could fax your resume. Try the autodealerships first.
People do transfer to UVI from the states - what year is she in, and does she plan to finish at UVI, has she applied and looked into whether all her credits will transfer meaning she will be at the same level she is now (freshman, soph ect.)? What does she want do do with the degree after graduating?
All the best.

Thank you for the input, especially about the online phone book. Its amazing how much of a feel for what you might be able to expect just by looking at the yellow pages. There are almost as many body shops (with the exeption of them being on 2 different islands) as there are in my town of 80k people. I would recomend every one look through the phone book as it puts some reality back into the relocation process.
Now its off to get the house sold... Any one want to buy a house in Greeley,CO ???
thank you
Logan
Hello Logan,
Keep in mind that there are a lot of backyard mechanics and body shops here - and they are usually small operations... that was my reason for suggestion the autodealerships first and then the other shops.
