autism
hey guys,
just a quick question, i know this may sound a bit funny, but my ex-fiance is thinking about coming down to live for a bit in st. thomas. she works with autistic children when she isnt a student. i was curious if anyone knew of a place to go to find out if there is any work on st. thomas for that sort of thing. any help would be good. thanks. mike
Michael: Unfortunately there is what seems to be an extraordinarily large population of PDD kids in the Virgin Islands. Special Ed (early childhood and regular) needs trained, competent and knowledgable folks. Also there is a birth to three program if she is into early assessment and intervention. The Peace Corps School (part of the public school system) is where the kids have migrated for the most part. I just looked back and read that she is a student? She will not get paid work...maybe volunteer??
thanks for the info man, im sure that itll help. i know she was looking to see if she could find families that she could work for privatly, but any info helps, thanks
mike

Linda: Peace Corps is an elementary school on St Thomas. Have you applied for a job with Education/Special Ed/ Early Childhhod, etc? With your credentials, they should snap you right up!!! Let me check with my "in the know" special ed contact...
I'm the ex-fiance... I hate it when he calls me that. I just posted a message and saw the one he posted. oops! All I can really say is I've been doing this for a few years, I work as an independant provider and work privately in the homes of kids with autism. I love doing it over the summers and basically just need something to support myself if/when I come down. That's the area I have the most experience in so that's my highest priority. Any other suggestions work for me, too.
I, too, dislike the term "ex" anything! If there are families with autistic kids who can afford your services, that would be great. I will tell you that if those folks are around, you would discover them by word of mouth, being on island... Unfortunately most of the kids that could use you are unable to afford such service.
