Asking for a little help on STT

Hello all, I am planning on moving to St. Thomas in or around the 25th of October. I am pursuing a masters degree in Marine Science at UVI. I have 2 friends making the move with me, quite an eclectic bunch that i think will make an interesting addition to the island along with myself. We are trying to do this move as well organized as is possible for us, we have some friends here that lived in STT and STX for many years, our friend from STT is trying to help us with jobs, a place to stay, a car, and all the details. I don't want to have to rely on one person for all this stuff, i want to be as well prepared as possible just in case something doesn't work out. We are going to be living around Charlotte Amalie and we all are planning on picking up bartending or serving jobs as that seems to be all that we have training for. I was wondering if anyone out here on this could point me in a good direction to go to for work, if any of you have a friend that owns a bar or restaurant that wouldn't mind passing along the message so we can establish a contact and get to know potential employers. We are also (at least 2 of us) are coming down in June for a scouting trip to line some up what in the hell we are actually gonna do when we step off the plane in October with our lives in our suitcases. We are looking for someone who might let us camp in their back yard, or let us crash in a spare bedroom or couch, we're not picky. We're from North Carolina, if any of you know NC then you'll know that we are 'good people' as they say from around here. We can provide entertaining stories and antics and probably a bottle of rum ( and maybe some moonshine from the mtns) in return for hospitality.
Also, I used to do Lampworking (glassblowing on a bench torch) making beads, pendants, knicknacks and whatnots, anyhow does anyone know of a studio in the islands that might do that kind of work? just an idea to use some old skills to drum up some extra money as I'm sure I'll probably need it, I have a feeling that my cost of living is about to jump a bit.
So i guess, if you believe in helping out complete strangers like we do here in NC and want to aid in the life blossoming of 3 very interesting youths ( mid 20's) we'll take any and all assistance that you can give or point in our direction. Thanks and ya'll are awesome!!

If you'll be getting your Master's at UVI & plan on living near Charlotte Amalie, working in Frenchtown where there are lots of bars & restaurants would probably be ideal. You're coming at the right time to find work - right before season cranks up. Check the Classified forum here on this site in the drop-down menu under Forum List.

Good luck! Wish you'd bring some of that wonderful BBQ with you.

I thought the semester started in August or early September... Besides the area near UVI, a lot of the UVI students live on the northside. When you come in June, you should be able to see the lay of the land.

Glassblowing- the only studio I know is at Maho Bay on St John They have a whole business with recycled bottles. There was a guy over there (STJ) who also used recycled Skye bottles- very pretty blue pieces. There is a poster here who has a bead shop. Again, when you come in June, just go around and talk to people. You will get a lot done networking in person. If you all have a good work ethic, you'll do fine.

Welcome, JDUB,

Great advice from the Trade and EE (as always, I might add!!). Where are you from in NC?? I am from Chapel Hill, NC. Had a business in Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach for 3 years as well...Nice to see some NC folks here!

Another one from the Old North State here. Grew up in Greenville, but before moving here I had lived in the Washington NC area for a little over 10 years.

Nice to see some fellow North Carolinians are holding it down in the VI, Originally I am from Mt. Airy or Mayberry as most people know it from the Andy Griffith show (whoo hoo !!) But I claim Wilmington as my home now, I think the VI is the only place I could move in the US that might top the beauty of NC, rock on ya'll

Yay, more from North Carolina. I was born in Lumberton, grew up in Hickory, went to college and worked for several years in Wilmington.

Man do I ever miss Wilmington. How's it doing these days?

I would say Frenchtown and Havensight are the hot spots for you in your area of expertise. Of course Red Hook is a good spot too, but it's too far if you don't have a car when you get here.

Wow! Lots of people from NC! I am a native of Wilmington and am now living in Hendersonville (near Asheville). We are considering a move to STX and have our house on the market. If and when it sells, we are doing a long PMV before making the leap...as we have young children we'll be bringing along, too.

Tamara

ChefJC-where are you in the mountains? Maybe I've eaten at one of the restaurants you've been working in!

There's a Texas society. Maybe there needs to be an NC Society with BBQ cook-offs?

Trade, that's the best idea I've heard in a long time. That's why you're the "Queen" of STT.

I thought it was Empress but maybe I'm demoted. Seriously, NC BBQ might do very well if it was done right.

Nice to see all the NC love on here. For all those from or familiar with Wilmington, well your little beach town is growing by leaps and bounds. It is hardly the same place in a lot of ways. There is a HUGE development off of Military Cutoff called Mayfaire, condos and stores, like something you would find in NY. Downtown has cleaned up a lot, the ghetto is getting pushed back slowly but surely. There are new roads, a new bridge, a new lake, PPD built a huge plant downtown, and things are getting more developed by the minute, the sadest I've heard is that they have plans to develop Masonboro island, all houses and a few bars, we no longer have that wild sanctuary to go to, oh well that is the way of the world I guess. other than that, Wilmington is still beautiful as always, its just starting to get nice out here, beautiful spring days!!

I'd definitely be down to join a NC group if ya'll wanted to get one going, we could fix some BBQ, throw back a few cold ones and talk about North CAK,

All those who offered their hospitality, many thanks, I will probably be e-mailing ya'll when it gets closer to my PMV in may-june, perhaps we can sit down have a beer, and fill me in a bit on island life essentials. Thanks again everyone!!

Ditto with Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach not being that nice, small beach town it once was. The changes from 2000 to end of 2004 was unbelievable, as were the real estate prices!! No more MOI (Middle of the Island) or Olympia restaurants on Wrightsville, as residential real estate could draw more money than commercial. Downtown Wilm. is great, though, with the Riverfront boardwalk and such....HATE to hear about Masonboro being developed...that is awful. Of course, considering the growth of the Triangle (being from Chapel Hill) is also astounding...I think a lot of folks have given up on FL as retirement worthy and settled in NC.

I think and NC society would be awesome here! NC BBQ would be great (although I don't eat pork anymore, my husband would like it, even though he is from FL), too. Trade, I will always refer to you as the STT Empress, not Queen!!

Aw, just call me Queenie. 😉 I want some of that BBQ, especially a pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw.

i have been in south west florida for 29 years in what was a small town. i can't wait to get out of here with what florida has become now. if things go as planed will be on STX in october, without selling the property, if the property sold it would be a lot easier. i was born and raised in maine.

Okay, I must say that I go to Wilmington many times a year as we still have lots of friends and family but no one has said anything to me about the development of Masonboro Island!!!! Please, please tell me that is not a possibility! It is truly an outrage and stuff like that is one of the reasons we left and chose not to raise our kids there. It was a fun party town and great place to grow up "back in the day", but ohhhhh how it has changed!

Well the following link makes me think the development of Masonboro Island is an impossibility...

http://www.coastallandtrust.org/pages/news_detail.jsp?id=26

I knew that this land was part of a preserve and I am hoping that nothing has changed since the time of that article that could make them "lose" that property.

Anyone who is familiar with it would be heartbroken about the loss, so I am sorry to "junk" up the VI board with this info, but it is a BIG deal!

Thanks for letting me blab!

I have been away limin for a few days on St Martin. Catching up on things here.

Say it ain't so! Not Masonboro. As a kid our family would go to Wrightsville for a week every summer. A great place to go to the beach back then.

Sign me up for a NC Society! Any takers for a cook off?

JDUB, if I can be of any help, let me know. Though I am on STJ.

Puddlejumper.
