Arriving in June for pre move visit

Hello all,
I have been following this site and have been reading hundreds of posts for more than a month. My wife and I have been to the US Virgin Islands before, as well as most other islands in the Caribbean, many of them multiple times. We have been biding our time in the states, working and saving so that when I could start receiving a pension, we would find a small but comfortable place in the tropics to retire.Wisconsin winters really suck. We had the USVI's as our top priority because we could take our pooches, and come and go to the states freely.
But this dream has turned to nightmare, as my wife has died in a terrible car accident about six weeks ago. So now I have no desire to continue to work here, and my urge to relocate is growing ten fold each day. I will be arriving to St. Thomas in June for an extended stay to find a new life.
I have many ideas, but a lot of questions. I would like to find a residence, but not actually move in until Nov. 2011, slowly bringing the few things that I want to bring over in that period of time. If I buy a house or condo, is it safe to leave it for a few months at a time alone? I have read stories of higher crime rates and thieves.Perhaps renting it by the month? I just turned 50, what are the chances of finding someone my age to date? I have read many relocation stories of people who wish they would not have tried to move. I think that it would be worse not ever finding out if I could or could not live there.
My job field is in the skilled trades, as a maintenance mechanic in a large industrial facility. What are my chances of finding work?
This is just the tip of the iceberg, I have so much more to ask in the near future,
Thank you for any advice or ideas, this is a great forum.

You didn't say which island, but my comments apply to all three.

Why not slow down a little? You have a plan to visit in June. If you need to get a way, come sooner. But it might be better to find something to rent for 3 - 6 months. Put your things at home in storage and just come down with your clothes and personal items. You could even buy a cheap car.

Take this time to look around and get a feel for the island you choose. This will give you time - time to heal, time to figure out what you really want to do.

Good luck
