Are there black panthers on STX?

In April 1968 Huey Newton was escorted off the island of ST Thomas by the VIPD back to the mainland. He was the only Black Panther I heard of.

There is the legend of the jaguar living in the rainforest, and it is partly true. The original "Island of Dr. Morreau was filmed here in Davis Bay before Carambola was developed. The producers brought in a huge variety of animals and a few escaped, including an Ocelot (just one). It was seen from time to time for a while. My wife saw it once in a tree. It could not reproduce, being solitary, and eventually no more sightings were reported. But the legend lives on...my students swear by it to this day.

As for the other kind of Black Panther, there are lots of lazy militants around, some gang activity and the occasional righteous homeless person advocating the death of everyone in his audience. Overall, however, like the jaguar legend, the stories outweigh the facts by a large margin.

It's funny. I never even thought of the political militants. Perhaps THAT is what my prospective newbie had been told about. He truly thought he was asking about cats. I have asked around, and everyone, to a count, asked first if it was the animal or the militant.

We used to have a house out by Secret Harbor that kept a leopard -- the gate had a big notice " Hunting Leopard On Premises "

I also thought of the militant first.

A friend of mine swears he saw a Black Panther on the East End a few years ago. It was late in the afternoon, no he wasn't drinking.
His wife was with him and she says that she did see something that resembled a big black cat.
The lady that does the psychic thing on Hollands Redfields show said that soon a strange creature would be discovered on STX, found nowhere else on earth.

Well, the psychic might have meant Adelbert Bryan.

I met an old Crucian man last year who hunted "Mad Bush Cows" up in the bush using a rifle with a nightscope.
When I asked if he was pulling my leg, he showed me a check stub from the VI govt for shooting cows.

He never mentioned any panthers, militant or otherwise.

Google ' fountain valley massacre'. I'm sure relatives and sympathizers of the 'fountain valley five' are still around.

i don't know about the rest of you, but if i was meandering around and saw a leopard, panther, or ocelot...i would literally die right there and then! i would NEVER expect to see that here! lol. i guess anything's possible. What is a hunting leopard...what does it hunt?!

some bush cats i have seen are as large as black panthers. lol i was thinking the militant group also at first. could be a bit afraid of man or beast if i ran into them.
