apartment searching
good afternoon fellow islanders. i'm on here again, hoping some of you could help me once again. i'm in despirate need of an apt. a/s/a/p. i'm looking for a 1 bdrm, no more than 750.00 per month, hoping somewhere in town due to the fact that i work in frenchtown and do not have wheels for transportation. i have been searching the island literally up/down. if any one has any info. or has friends that are renting, i would be most appreciative if you could let me know quickly. even a room for one week until other accomodations could be set up. thanx so much in advance. eagerly hoping to hear from you soon. thanx again - stormy
Hello,stormy
Villa Fairview hotel has short term rentals for $600 dollars a month.
you know whats sad -
I paid 650 for a 1 bdrm in Omaha - I had a crazy upstairs neighbor, crackhads to the left of me..that would never answer the door with out peeking their head out to see if it was the cops...(really weird ppl)...AND NO BEACH!
this 600 looks like a deal! LOL
The price for the Villafairview is right-but watch out for the neighborhood and the accomodations leave alot to be desired.
can you explain?
what i mean is that the website is not an accurate depiction of what it really is. the website doens't say waht kind of area it is in, and when you tell people that you live there and that it is in town on garden street, they are amazed that you live in, and i qoute, "the worst part of the island" i was asked if i had heard gunshots, and i did. i didn't walk home after dark, had to take a cab which can add up when you work nights. my room was small, extremely hot, no hot water(which actually worked out b/c i was always so hot) if you get one of the lower priced rooms, they look nothing like the pictures of the better rooms on the website, all i can say is that it was i big letdown when i arrived on the island. i must say it was good to have a roof over my head when i got here though, and it was a good starting point to get things going. i just think people need to know what they are getting into before they decide to stay there, and the website doesn't tell you all you need know.
well - Thank yo ufor ythe info - but I would be happy right now getting there, and like you said, have a roof.
how are the closet spaces?
I suppose I have to defend Villa Fairview as I am the owner. I have no idea who anonymous is, as If I would do anything to hurt them.
I once learned a lesson years ago while listening to an interview of Bill Cosby. When asked what the key to sucess was, he said he had no idea. He did say that he knew the key to failure, and that was, you can't please all the people all the time.
I have people staying at Villa Fairview for over six months, they can't wait to pay their rents. I have people that utilize it for what it is, a place to live temporarily while you search for an apartment. Some stay the month, some leave as soon as they find what they are looking for. One complained of the neighborhood and moved to an area that the same week he moved there, someone was stabbed right down from where he was living in a 'safe' area.
I see no need to put anything on the website about the area it is in. Does the Holiday Inn say it is located one block away from an area worst than Villa Fairview's area? I doubt that. When asked by email, I tell exactly the way I feel about the area. I have an on property caretaker that prettty much keeps things safe at the villa. I always tell everyone that thay may want to take a cab home at night and not to walk up the street. This would be the same in any area of the island. The safety depends on you, the individual, to be cautious. Utopia does not exist, sure it's paradise, but we have problems like any other city.
In regard to the heat, I don't know what to say. Some of the rooms are not as cool as others. I offer fans to keep you cool, at least 2 floor fans and a ceiling fan. In regard to the water heater, if it was reported, I am sure it would be fixed.
Not many places offer what I do for the price that I do. To have a place witha telephone, Cable TV, fully furnished when you get off the plane, to me is a needed service. I keep trying to upgade the place as I go. It's over 150 years old and needs care. I have rented to my share of misfits, drunks and drug addicts. I weed them out as soon as I can, and hope that next one won't be overbearing.

Villa Fairview
As a recent former resident, I have to defend Villa Fairview.
For the price, and the assurance of having a "landing place", when we moved here, it worked out well for us.
Being a 150 year old building, there are issues from time to time, but I found Ronnie to be pretty responsive. We lost hot water once, but it was repaired within about 3 or 4 hours of my reporting it.
Is it air conditioned? No, but it doesn't claim to be. With 2 ceiling fans and a floor fan, I slept well.
The pool was a nice benefit. I used it probably 25 of the 28 days that we lived there.
The on-site laundry facilites was a nice benefit. It seemed expensive until I moved out and found I am now paying 25% more than I did there. I guess anything related to water is just more here.
With regard to the neighborhood, I never felt particularly threatened. I heard no gunshots, my car was not vandalized or stolen, etc. I'm sure there is generally more to be concerned about in the city than in some other areas of the island, but I never had a problem. (I generally subscribe to the theory that most crime involves drug issues and happens very late at night. Since I don't involve myself in the drug scene, and I am generally in bed by 10 or 11, so I expected no problems).
I will say that if I were to be alone late at night, I would probably have taken a cab to get back. That is just common sense.
Finally, we met some great new friends there. Several of us put together a fantastic Christmas dinner. We drank and ate and swam and really had a great time. It really helped us feel better about moving so far from home to be able to meet a bunch of new people right off the bat. We still hang out with these people often.
Anyway, I ramble. The bottom line is that the Villa Fairview is not the Ritz or Morningstar, but for us it worked out well. If you arriving on island without really knowing your way around, and probably without a job, it is a good choice for a place to get started.
Ronnie, when is your first vacancy and do you allow dog?
Thanx.

Ronnie-
and all -
Your on an Island that is about 75-80 everyday...think of all the money you are NOT spending on A/C??
Open the window and let the breeze hit ya! Enjoy the sun, youll get used to the heat.
I myself like warm weather, and hate A/C = living in GA (which can be hotter than the VI)
I never used A/C in home, or car. I am just just a warm weather lover i guess..lol
Thanks Ronnie - I am sure everything is fine - and cant wait to get there!
