Apartment Prices
I am currently living on a small island off the coast of Cancun, Mexico in the Caribbean. I am being transfered to St. John and was wondering if anyone can tell me what a apartment may cost. Now i live in a very small place that is decent with water and electricity. Nothing much at all just a place to stay really and i am looking to get something similar when i arrive there. What is the cheapest place i could find on St. John. I don't need anything fancy just a roof and bathroom and small kitchen. Thanks for any info you can give me.
Hello Jackie,
If you scroll to the top of this page and click on Home you will see the menu for the site. Choose Cost of Living and Apartments from the menu - you will find apartment prices and costs on electricity, cable, gas etc.

Thank you for the info but like i said i live on a very small island now off the coast of Mexico. I have been there for about four years and if i were to check the site for the island that i live on now all the apartments would be more then the one that i have. I mean what is the very cheapest place that you can find?
jackie: As you know from living on an island, that there are generalities about prices and then there is the one special deal that you make by being in the right place at the right time. I think all we can do is give you the generalities, you would have to find that special price. I do believe that you are in for sticker shock from the prices in Mexico. St John is the most expensive Virgin, too. On the other hand, you can drink the water and eat raw vegetables! 🙂
The prices on STJ are high. The estimates listed in the section on cost of living are fairly accurate. Word of mouth and the bulletin board at Connections are probably the only way to find anything. You will sometimes see things listed for less. What is available and the cost varies so much depending on when you are actually there looking. Finding something "decent" could be a challenge in itself when looking for something simple and less expensive. Location on the island is also going to make a difference. Feel free to email me if you have any questions I can help you with.

would you reccomend first moving to St. Thomas then checking out the prices on St. John. I am very used to simple living and don't want to change much. Some place that is not livable to most people would be my ideal place.
Your best bet for getting a reasonably priced place on St John is to come at the end of season or in the summer. For the next 4 months everyone and their bros is in search of the low priced place in St John. The odds of coming across one this late in the game are very, very low.... Do you know anyone currently living there who may put you up?
Hi Jackie
I taught English in Playa del Carmen several years ago so I know a little bit about the area where you live. You'll find it isn't really comparable. Nothing on St John will be remotely close to what you're used to. Not only rent, but the cost of transportation and food as well. St Thomas (where I am now) is less expensive than St John, but not by much. There's an inexpensive ferry that runs between St Thomas and St John which may be an option for you.
You wouldn't happen to be on Isla Mujeres would you?
Best of luck.
Jackie,
Sounds like you were on Isla Mujeres. Been there once, beautiful small island and very laid back. Your post is back in Nov. Have you made it to the USVI yet?
