Apartment complexes
I am flying down to St. Thomas tomorrow in order to scout out housing, jobs, etc. for a permanent move in May. I looked in the yellow pages for apartment complexes, but they list a number of them that are priced by the night and are more for tourists/vacationers. Some complexes don't even list which island they are on. Is there anybody who is familiar with apartment complexes on St. Thomas who could tell me which ones are actually long-term rental units? Even better, is there anybody who might tell me which long-term rental apartment complexes are worth checking out and which ones I probably ought to avoid? I will have a limited amount of time and a lot to do, so some guidance ahead of time will make my scouting trip this week (and my move in May) much smoother. I will be looking for a two bedroom unit, by the way, since I am moving down with a friend. Thanks in advance.
I talked to a real estate agent. They always have listings of rentals as well. Type Virgin Islands Real Estate in a search engine and get listings of several different ones.
I would recommend you pick up an Island Trader and the Daily News. Open the papers to the classifieds for apartments and you will have dozens of apartments to choose from. This is really how its done in St. Thomas.. there are apartment buidlings yes - a few. I can think of three, maybe four - but nothing like in the mainland where there is large apartment complexes with swimming pools, gated, elevators and so forth. If you want a condo association type place you could try Mahagony Run see if there is anything there - you would have golf, pools, tennis, gated.... otherwise its regular apartments - which are part of a home, or sometimes a structure with maybe 5-10 apartments in the building. Try those two newspapers and go through the listings - you will need to call the numbers listed ask whatever questions you have and then go look at the place to see if its what you like and convienently located for you.

Islander is right, as usual. For apartment-type living, you will probably have to rent a condo. Most apartments are additions to a private home. Most rentals are through the Island Trader, Daily News, announcements on bulletin boards or word-of-mouth. Do you have a job set up? Maybe someone can help you from that end... You might look for short term digs like Villa Fairview if you can't find something on this visit. There are a few realtors who specialize in rentals, too. Good luck!
