AOL dial up service
Hi,
Has anyone been able to use AOL dial up service on STT? I brought my laptop with me to STT last year and while I did have a local access number, I was unable to sign on. I was told by someone (I don't remember who) that this was an AOL issue.
I have been back a few times since then, but have not bothered to lug my laptop with me. However, I would like bring it with me on my next trip which is coming up in a few days, if it makes any sense to do so.
I've only rarely had luck using the AOL number for STT. I get so frustrated that I always use the 800# and don't even try any more...but watch out...the extra fees can add up quick. I've gone ahead and gotten a different service to use while traveling.
Hi Kelly,
Thank you for the info. I hadn't thought about the fees. Have you had good luck with the service you currently use while in STT? If so, would you mind giving me a recommendation?
I do have some Earthlink software that I picked up at the STT Office Max last year, but I think their extra fees are high as well.
there are two local numbers for aol, but they have the same surcharge as the 800 number. apparently the phone company charges them and then aol charges you.
Hi Thea,
Thank you for the additional info 🙂

Hi Mell,
I'm not familiar with what Thea said about being charged a fee for the STT numbers when they do go through. I'm guilty of not even checking the bill that close so I don't know about that. (My husband is telling me over my shoulder that this is documented somewhere on AOL).
As far as a recommendation, I don't really know. I use my existing internet service from my business (stateside) when I'm traveling or on island. It is verizon DSL. I haven't checked yet but I'm getting ready to be there full-time now and don't know for sure what I'm going to do then. I'll let you know if I hear of anything. If you don't mind, please do the same.
Thanks.
Why not just use a local provider while you are here? Dial-up is offered by Ackley Communications (surfVI), Choice Communications (VIAccess), Innovative (VIPowerNet) and an off-island company called Pennswoods.
surfVI is just $13.96/month, no contracts, no setup fees, local number. So for under 14 bucks, you can get a local provider with local numbers, and not have to worry about getting charged a fee for numbers, or numbers not working.
KellySTJ, I'm really interested to hear how you get your Verizon DSL to work here.
Best,
LR
Even better - sign up for Surfbest.net and you will get monthly unlimited service for $12.50/month and will be using the same acess number used by Earthlink subscribers do (and who pay a whole lot more money for unlimited).
Best tech support when/if you need it of any of the ISP's.
Only once had trouble connecting, during the busiest Christmas season.
Highly recommend it.

LR-
Thanks for the list of providers...now I won't have to research it out.
My business Verizon DSL service has a remote access number included (800# for free).

Hi everybody,
Thank you for all the great information! I guess I will go ahead and bring my laptop with me on this trip.
This helped a lot -- Thanks again 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hi,
I just wanted to follow up regarding Surfbest.net. I took my laptop with me to STT and am using the service now. It works great!!!
I had to call tech support once and got through quickly and easily. The service is $12.50 per month, with no additional "surcharges" or anything like that.
Thanks again for letting me know about this excellent, inexpensive ISP 🙂
Mell
When something works great we need to pass it along - hopefully helping a good thing stay that way! The tech support guys are great, and if you call and it's busy, you can leave your number and someone actually calls you back. The also called me back the NEXT DAY to make sure that whatever the issue was, it had gotten resolved!!! Pretty neat.
When you go to cancel, I would suggest sending the notice to both billing@surfbest.net and cancel@surfbest.net.
