anybody know a cheap taxi driver
i need a driver for a couple days just wanted to know the going rate
I wouldn't classify him as "cheap", implying something less desireable somehow, but he is reliable, fair, honest and has been driving here for over 20 years.
His "handle" is Fat Man and his name is Shot - you can reach him at his cell phone - 340-513-2829
Most of the drivers I've encountered seem to have similar rates to get between known spots.
As was told me - just make sure you discuss the price before you take the trip - and then that is the amount you pay, plus any tip of course.
Hello Melody,
Rates are fixed and published per destination and per person. You can view St. Thomas rates at
http://vinow.com/stthomas/getting_around_stt/taxi_stt/
If you wanted the same driver to be available for all three days at your call you would have to work out a price with them for this service and the price would be negotiable and really up to the driver. You might consider renting a car for three days and then you are free to come and go as you like.

Check with The Crystal Palace - Ronnie is the owner and he posts often on this message board. The Crystal Palace is just blocks from shopping in Charlotte Amalie and is where I spent my first week on the island while waiting for my apt to become available.
In regards to staying in a short term or long term place, I could use some advice. I will be moving down Sept. 9th and can't decide if I should rent a room for a month and take my time apartment hunting or if renting a room for say a week or two is a better idea and really hitting the streets hard right when I get there. What would you suggest? Is it possible to find a decent place to live within a week of arriving? Or should I really take my time and look around? Any and all advice is helpful!
Thanks!
Lindsay
I arrived on St.Thomas near the end of September last year, and it was still possible to find a place. Since you're arriving earlier in September, I would think your chances of finding a place will be even easier. Given my experience, and that of many people that I've met and heard about since - I would say you would have a pretty good chance of finding a place within a week.
So get yourself booked into The Crystal Palace, a B&B just a few short blocks from the main shopping in Charlotte Amalie, rent a car and look look look for a place while enjoying a great view from the historic old B&B's balcony where you can see the ships arrive (if you're up early enough) and depart at the end of the day.
Island Paul-
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it and will get right on reserving a room.
