Any Volkswagen Owners?

Hi all.
I'm still putting the puzzle together about whether or not to ship my car. My biggest fear is that parts will take forever to reach the island. My boyfriend and I will be sharing a car for a while, so we don't want to be "stuck". While visiting the island I did see many Cabrios like mine, so that was a plus.

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic on STT?
Anyone drive a VW and would like to share some experiences?

I did speak with someone at the Caribbean Auto Mart who said she could help me purchase a new car. There are quite a few hoops we'd have to jump through in order to make that happen.

Any replies would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

heh, i couldnt pass up answering on that one.
but yeah, vw [older, beetle] on st john.

cabrios are popular, and believe it or not, highly desirable cars here too. unlike the states where theyre total chick cars, there seem to be 'gangs' in stt that drive nothing but chrome-wheeled, big-speakered, metallic pearl paint job cabrios around. they often get to drive many of the carnival queens around through the carnival parade...

so resale wouldnt be a problem if it ever came to that either.

parts take a while longer, but no real problems beyond time frame. and for mechanics, i use "high performance auto", a little tiny shop in tutu, the owner used to work in one of the biggest AZ all-vw shops [mostly air cooled, but he works on all foreign autos]

the roads will be a little rough on it, but if you can deal with the occasional dent and replaced clutch, my vote is bring her down =)

What is your opinion of how large american cars hold up in St Thomas? I am considering shipping my Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler 300M. I am concerned about the wear and tear and also the desirability of these vehicles for thieves. It is not my intention to stand out, so therefore I am trying to decide whether to downgrade significantly, or ship my vehicles to the island based on what information that I can glean from the local populace.

=) jane, well understood =)
and chris, they seem to be neither desirable nor sturdy cars.... my thought, if you dont love them, is to sell them, buy some secondhand SUVs that the soccer moms no longer want [awwww, three year-old grand cherokee? how uncool] for cheap, and ship them down here. theyll treat you well, parts are easier, fixing is easier... just my thoughts =)
