Erin, you will find there has been a great deal of discussion on this board on the topic if you do a search for teaching.

Many teachers have come to enjoy working in the VI, and while you will surely find some mixed experiences, there are definite advantages, especially if you enjoy swimming, snorkeling, diving, sailing and/or boating.

I know you are in the early stages, but you can most likely get better advice if you tell what age groups/subject areas you're interested in teaching, prefer public or private school, and which island you're most interested in moving to.

Good luck!

thank you starfish!

i am interested in moving to st thomas- seems like a good place to start anyway. currently, i am an early education teacher in a private school. a similar position would be ideal but i have k-12 experience. i have heard wonderful things about the antilles school...

Erin, I'll add to what others have told you about Antilles -- it's probably the best school on St. Thomas and they an excellent early childhood program. It also may be a good starting point because the majority of teachers and students are not native Virgin Islanders and so they will be sympathetic and presumably helpful in your transition.

Keep in mind that teacher salaries are on the low side while cost of living is on the high side. You may need to make some lifestyle choices. If you enjoy the beach and water sports, as well as the natural beauty of the Caribbean, these choices will be easy to make. If you prefer malls, large concerts, shopping opportunities, and chain restaurants, then these choices become harder.

Other private schools you might look at are All Saints Cathedral School (Anglican) and Saints Peter and Paul (Catholic). Good luck!
