Just wondering what is the most economical way to stay at a short term place while we are looking for an apartment??? Are there any hostels or such or even campgrounds??

Depending on what it is you are looking for, there are several options for short term lodging. During the hight of season however, it may be a little harder. Several hotels have long term rates which discounts your stay drastically, you generally have to speak with a manager about something like this. There are also several B&B's that offer the same thing. It is really tough to find an apartment right off the bat, so be prepared to lay out some money until you find one. No matter what every one of the locals tell you, do not move to the Northside. Everyone will you it is cooler there and has better views..while both are true what they don't tell you is that unless you have a brand new car and several telephones, you will get stuck there. Not to mention that home burglary is much higher there. Try for either the East end or the West end, South side is not too bad either in the right location.
Check out the Island Trader when you arrive, that is where 90% of all apartments are listed. I hear that The Carib Beach Hotel has short term apartments for around $1000 a month, that is still cheaper than most everything else. Good Luck

I am sorry John, I rarely flat out disagree with people's opinions on this board, but I take great exception to your statement regarding the North Side that, "home burglary is much higher there."
It is indisputably one of the safest areas on-island! Don't you think there's a reason, as you say, every one of the locals will tell you to move to the Northside?

Hello,

No hostels on any of the islands. St. Croix has a eco-guest house/camping facility. St. John has camping.

You can stay in a b&b or short term quest house. Take a look at the following - they are on St. Thomas.

All the best with your move.
