Any food service workers here?
Me again... still looking for all the info I can out of the best source I have found- all you guys!!! I am curious about job opps for "overqualified" restaurant work. My boyfriend is the executive chef and I am the manager of a fine dining/bistro-type/wine spectator awarded restaurant. We are setting our sights low- cook and waitress hopefully. We are extemely friendly and motivated, and will be looking for jobs around Oct-Nov. Does anyone know the turnover rate at the more high-end places? Does someone have to die before you can get a job? (As it is where I work) Also when is the best time to apply? (month)? Any info would be helpful!! Thank You---Amy
If you are going to be on STJ, the turn over will be high this year. Seems like a lot of people leaving. I might be able to hook you up with contacts from the company I work with. They own four fine dining restaurants on STJ.

Your boyfriend could find work as a chef.... particularly around Oct-Nov right before season starts. And you can find work perhaps as a hostess, waitress or perhaps a manager.... No someone doesn't have to "retire" before getting a job in the high end places... it is greatly affected by season and non-season times and your qualifications - and you will be comind down at a great time.
There are many folks who have been with restaurants a long long time, usually the bartender and a few of the waiters... but they still higher new people.

I am moving to St. Thomas. I have looked through the restaurant guides and I am very excited about the prospects there. It seems like there are great restaurants, but I have no idea about which folks consider to be overpriced, bad serviced, pretentious, too casual, etc. Unfortunately my schedule does not allow me to visit before I move, Instead I will stay with my parents at their condo (pt. pleasant-NO NO PETS) and find a place while my man & dog prepare to join me. I am trying to be as smart as I can be about this- I just know from people trying to get a job from me that unless I see a face it is useless to send a resume ahead, no matter how qualified a person might be. My area (Durango, Co) is VERY competitive. I have been doing this a long time and I really would like to step back from management for a while...I am so much more concerned with working with a fun group of people in a team player environment. I want to work where the nice people are, and where those people take their job personally. Know of any like that????? Oh, and if you could also arrange for a goose that lays golden eggs, I'll take that too~!!!!!!! LOL 🙂 Thanks, Islander, for all the info I have culled from this site thru you!!! ( I cannot get my parents to check anything out, they are beer & pizza folks- I love it too, but I don't make money slinging pie anymore!!!)

There are lots of great restaurants, you are right. For waitressing you are quite right seeing your face and you in person is really necessary - otherwise you will hear contact me when you get here. As for your boyfriend -a chef might have more chances at sending a resume and finding work that way.
I can not comment on which locations have folks that are nice and work as a team - never worked in the food service industry... had lots of friends that worked as bartenders and wait staff on St. Thomas. They would complain from time to time about communication and slackness.... but I assume in a restuarant from time to time the host might get frustrated with a waiter the waiter with the kitchen staff the waitresses to the bus boys and so forth... never worked anywhere - where issues didn't arise from time to time about someone doing something or not doing it. Its whether the employees are adult enough and profession enough to work them out that is the important thing.
A run down on restaurants... ekkk!!! the golden egg laying goose seems easier. LOL.
I am leaving out a lot of places - I am sure. LOL 🙂 best bet is to get a list, give us an idea of what type of place you want to work?? besides great employees,
all are good - busy places (the ones with * seem like they would best match your expereince while offering a less demanding job then manager, a waitress like you said - but keep you in the same type of restaurant feeling - if that is what you want.
*Higher End Food/Great View/Great Service/: Agave Terrace, Banana Tree Grille, Herves(I thougth Herves prices were very high for the quanity of food you good, the quality was great, but just not enough food... LOL), Old Stone Farm House, The Ritz Carlton Dining Room, Craig and Sallys(always enjoy their food, pricey though and no view), Virgilios...
****Next level (a bit less pricey then the above, great everything else); Blue Moon Cafe, Alexanders, Azures, Randy's (they are pricey on some things), Caribbean Saloon, Mafolie
Casual good prices, great service, more local and visitors as well; Bryans Bar and Grill, Cuzzins, Sibs, Fungis,
Casual, bar, but busy; Greenhouse, Duffys, all the joints in Havensight, more of a bar environment...
There are other restaurants too, all the hotel restaurants and other private ones too.
