Any firefighters out there
I was hoping to meet up with someone who works for or knows about the VI fire services. Want to know about the good and bad of the job down there. Ive been a FF in the states for almost 22 yrs. Also if some is a E.M.T who might have some info would be great. Thanks
Do you know that EMS and Fire are separate services here?
From all that I have read that ems is run out of the hospitals, if im correct it is still part of the local goverment but have not been able to find much info on it. Thats why I was hoping to fing a FF or E.M.T so I could pick there brain. I cant even find a web site for the fire services all I get is the Police web site.
Yes, EMS is part of the Health Department. They are "stationed" in the ER of the hospital, which is a semi-autonomous arm of the territorial government. Fire is its own department. It is unusual to see websites for any government agency. They are frequently not updated or monitored, so information is not always accurate on the ones that do exist. When you come here for your visit, you will see what I mean. You will learn much more in a few days of face-to-face contact than you ever could with government websites.
The VI Daily News published salaries of most of the 10,000 government workers a few weeks back. If it is available on line, it may be an eye opener for you.
Ok thanks I will try and look that up.
Can you post the direct link to the salaries, I cant find them?
Okay, it looks like the Daily News is charging for the info. Interesting, since they made a big deal how it was public information that the tax payer had a right to know!! Anyway. For those listed as firefighter, the salaries are generally low $30K to mid $40K, with a few around $50K. Then fire corporal is around $50K, fire sergeant is $50-$60K, fire lieutenant and fire captain around $60K, deputy and assistant director $75-80K and fire chief $80K.
You should visit for sure if Firefighter is the career choice. It is very different here for a few reasons - in my opinion the biggest, in a firefighting sense, is the lack of much public water - very few water pipes on the island, almost none in the hills, and Very Few hydrants. It is a real challenge to fight a major fire - like the Mountaintop Complex in STT a few years ago - without a constant supply of water - and getting tanker// pumper trucks to many of our homes is nigh on to impossible. The VIFD does a great job under some tough conditions here.
There are also Airport Firefighters, which I believe are part of the VI Port Authority.
